Introducing Gjon Mili
Pioneer Dance & Jazz Photographer
Anyone who has been swing dancing for more than a year is well acquainted with Gjon's Life Magazine photos! Gjon Mili has taken some of the most iconic jazz and dance pictures of the swing era. I have always been in awe of his photographs as they contain a unique quality that captures the depth of spirit of what we are about.
Make sure to take a look at our Clip of the Week -- it's Gjon's masterpiece - "Jammin' The Blues."

Gjon Mili was trained as an engineer. He arrived in America from Albania in 1923 and began working for LIFE. Collaborating with Professor Harold Edgerton, the father of electronic flash, they pioneered strobe photography. In 1939, Mili began dissecting movement with rapid-sequence firing that showed multiple images on a single film frame.
Here are some more of my favorite Gjon Mili photos
(in order: Gene Nelson, Gene Krupa, Ray Bolger, Gene Kelly):

Swing & Lindy Hop & 1920's Partnered Charleston
The Featured Class
1920's Partnered Charleston
& Flash Finishes
Lindy Hoppers world-wide, don't consider themselves complete until they have the related dances under their dancing feet as well: a splash of Balboa, Collegiate Shag, and 1920's Partnered Charleston. Each of these three dances had strong resurgences in the early 2000's, especially with dancers here in Los Angeles.
1920's Partnered Charleston is great to "season" your swing dancing.
Kelly asked for some extras - Flash Finishes... nice endings for social dances. We'll do 1-2 of those each class, as well.
So come along and join us in this fun series.
Level 2 and up!

THIS WEDNESDAY

How is this year flying by so quickly? Halloween already? You bet! And that means it's time for our annual Halloween Party at Rusty's Rhythm Club.
COSTUME CONTEST
The perennial question of newbies is, "Do people really dress up?" Last year we only had three people NOT come in costume.
For those first timers, we recommend making sure that you can swing dance in your costume. Avoid masks, swords, and wings.

JACK O' LANTERN CONTEST
Last year, we had our first Rusty's Jack O' Lantern Contest. Wow! I was super impressed. Let's see what you've got this year!

For costumes and pumpkins, be creative as possible!
This dance is always one of the highlights of our year.

10-28 Suzy Q's Revival with Stompy Jones
Well, children, long ago in the swing dance revival, there was a wonderful place where swing dancers gathered every Friday night - it was called Suzy Qs. This was so many years ago, there are only some of us left who remember it.
But now, it's your chance to "live" and "re-live" that fun dance hall with a one-night gathering...
... all to the GREAT music of STOMPY JONES!

CATALINA SWING DANCE FESTIVAL!
November 18-20, 2011
26 MILES ACROSS THE SEA...
SANTA CATALINA IS WAITING FOR THEE
(pardon the paraphrasing)
The Catalina Swing Dance Festival will feature:
* Non-Stop Live Music *
*
World Class Instructors/Performers *
*
Dance Workshops for All Levels *

I want to give my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION for Joel Ply's Catalina Swing Dance Festival. To spend three days on that beautiful island in swing heaven, well, what can I say?
As all this takes place 26 miles across the sea, the price is a bit higher than other camps, but well worth it! And you'll never regret it. Joel has set up a payment plan this year, so you can portion out your camp fees.
Last year, a bunch of Lindy by the Sea students got a house together, which is much more affordable that hotels. So start coordinating!!
See you there!

THE SONG
Just in case you need any more encouragement, here's The Four Preps singing:
"26 Miles (Santa Catalina)"

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER! WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU
Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers.
I wonder why.
Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.
If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away.
We can work something out! Here's some options:
~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.
~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.
~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.
~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!
I know that dancing really helps in hard times.
So don't be a stranger!
We'll work it out to meet your needs.
Email me or call 310 606 5606. I'll do everything I can to keep dancing in your life.
