"DANCING SAVED MY LIFE"
LITERALLY!

Back in 2000, when I was first recovering from my swing dance accident (where I suffered five breaks in my neck and a cervical cord injury) I remember well my doctor saying to me, "It's because you are a dancer that you survived and are walking today."

I never forgot those words.

(You can see by the picture left, dancing with Nick Williams in my "halo," I didn't let a little thing like a broken neck stop me! Dancing was a big part of my recovery.)

This past Friday night at our dance, I heard these words again - "Dancing saved my life" - from a lovely handful of fellow survivors. All of these pictured below were involved in accidents that should have killed them. Of those, four (Peggy, Tina, Kirk, and I) were active swing dancers at the time of our accidents and believe, in no uncertain terms, that because of our dancing we are alive today. (Travis started dancing after his accident!)

Survivors: Kirk, Peggy, Travis, Tina, & Rusty
Kirk skied into tree and was in a coma, Peggy suffered a heart attack,
Travis had a car accident and was in a coma, Tina suffered a stroke,
and Rusty a broken neck and cord injury.

Our latest two survivors, Peggy & Tina, made their first appearance Friday at Rusty's since their heart traumas. Golly, were we glad to see them!! Peggy full-on dancing, and Tina well on her way.

Peggy told us all that her doc said the same thing - "Dancing saved your life."

I know a lot of us feel that dancing saves our life just because of what it gives us in friendships, dancing, joy, exercise, and happiness. Perhaps it's all the same, whether dancing saves us physically and/or emotionally -- what a grand gift it is!

TINA'S BEAUTIFUL NOTES
TO US ALL

Thumbs up to Tina from her Lindy by the Sea friends

Yes, we really are a "dance family." Why? Because we are there when one of members needs us. Two months ago, when our little "Squeaky Tina" had a massive stroke and landed in the hospital, we were there.

During the early part of her hospitalization, she was in ICU, and we were not permitted to visit. But we were determined to "be there" and show her our love and compassion. We made a special video sending our love. We signed a huge card. And we pitched in enough money to send flowers, balloons, and plants to her hospital room EVERY day for nearly three weeks. Guess what? She loved it!

Wow! Did we get the love back this past Friday, when Tina showed up at the dance and gave us her special, fabulously strong hugs!

Dear Tuesday LBS Classmates,

Thank you for the touching video on Facebook, and the well wishes and flowers an gifts. I had the balloons and flowers and card situated so that I would see them first thing when I opened my eyes every morning. I felt all your support. And missed our weekly hellos and hugs. I can't wait to give you all those weekly hugs and exchange our usual pleasantries.

Struggling with those dance moves together, I felt like we all became family. That was never more evident to me than when I was in hospital and Tuesday night would come and I missed us circling up and awaiting Ron's reveal of his groovy socks. And after class when all us congregated in that back room to put on our street shoes and exchanges our niceties. Who knew what a weekly hug meant.

Missing you all,

Much appreciation.

Love,

Tina Bui
Squeaky

Dear Rusty's Rhythm Club

Thank you so much for all your well wishes and gifts sent to the hospital. They really brightened up my room. I feel so honored to be part of such an amazing group of kind people. Can't wait to get my dancing feet under me again.

Much gratitude.

Tina Bui

Cheer Your Fellow Students On At Rusty's This Wednesday

We have a special treat for you this week, the Tuesday night Featured Class will be performing the routine they have been learning and practicing for the past eight weeks - Secret Agent Man.

Make sure you're there to cheer them on; for many of these swing kids it's their very first performance, and they'll love to see your smiling faces out there and hear your applause.

Secret Agent Man was choreographed by Rusty Frank & Ron Campbell and features Johnny Rivers singing the theme.

DAN & ALICE SPREAD THE WORD OF LINDY HOP
ON THEIR TRAVELS BY COACH

Two of our long-time favorite dance friends, Dan &Alice, have a unique way of showing their love of Lindy Hop - they painted it on the back and side of their traveling coach. So as they go rolling along our nation's highways, I'm sure many a drivers get a nice smile, and perhaps an idea!

Letters from past "Master Track" students:

Rusty/Ron,

I have been dancing in the Lindy scene for more than eight years and your Master's class is far and away the best class I've ever taken. I recommend this class to anyone who is serious about becoming a great dancer.

Thanks to both of you for making it such a success.

Scott Giordano

Hi Rusty & Ron,

I want to thank you for coming up with the "Master Track." I look forward to coming to class every week. I love music and I love to dance. I have a new appreciation for the music now and you have taught me how to dance. Yes dance, not just going from one move to the next, but having fun with the music and my dance partner. You have replaced that bored look on my dance partners face with a big smile. Thank you. Thank you.

Jerry Mancini

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This eight-week course, developed by Rusty Frank and Ron Campbell, is designed for people who want to bring their dancing to the next level. The focus of the program is on musicality, styling, and individual development. Class size is limited to twelve students, six leaders and six followers.*

Each week, Rusty and Ron work with each of the students individually and as a group in a series of exercises and challenges. The students are filmed each week, and the footage is studied as a group (in Lindy By The Sea's traditional upbeat, encouraging, and friendly environment) to examine individual areas of goals and progress. At the end of the eight week course, each student is presented with a DVD of their own dancing to track improvement and set goals for future development.

This course will start up every eight weeks. The total cost for all eight classes is $100/per student, including the personalized DVD.

*Students should be versed in the Lindy By The Sea curriculum prior to this joining this course (Levels 1-3 and at least half of the Track

10-28 Suzy Q's Revival with Stompy Jones

Well, children, long ago in the swing dance revival, there was a wonderful place where swing dancers gathered every Friday night - it was called Suzy Qs. This was so many years ago, there are only some of us left who remember it.

But now, it's your chance to "live" and "re-live" that fun dance hall with a one-night gathering...

... all to the GREAT music of STOMPY JONES!

CATALINA SWING DANCE FESTIVAL!
November 18-20, 2011

26 MILES ACROSS THE SEA...
SANTA CATALINA IS WAITING FOR THEE
(pardon the paraphrasing)

The Catalina Swing Dance Festival will feature:
* Non-Stop Live Music *
* World Class Instructors/Performers *
* Dance Workshops for All Levels *

a

I want to give my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION for Joel Ply's Catalina Swing Dance Festival. To spend three days on that beautiful island in swing heaven, well, what can I say?

As all this takes place 26 miles across the sea, the price is a bit higher than other camps, but well worth it! And you'll never regret it. Joel has set up a payment plan this year, so you can portion out your camp fees.

Last year, a bunch of Lindy by the Sea students got a house together, which is much more affordable that hotels. So start coordinating!!

See you there!

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.

Email me or call 310 606 5606. I'll do everything I can to keep dancing in your life.
