IT TRULY IS THE "WAY THAT YOU DO IT"

aWhat makes any dancer great?

I know what I have always loved about dancing is the diversity expressed through each of the individual dancers. To me, this is what makes them great.

In this week's Rhythm Report, I have as the featured clip my good friend and dance legend - Chazz Young. He is highly sought after around the world at swing dance camps... teaching primarily tap. Tap and jazz were his featured dances when he was young. But being the son of Lindy Hop innovator Frankie Manning and having been a member of Norma Miller's jazz dance group, there was no way he would get away without having a good amount of Lindy Hop under his dancing feet.

Watch the clip and you'll see that there really isn't a complicated move in his dance. But, my, oh, my! The WAY that he does it.

His partner, Virginie Jensen, reacts so beautifully to his musicality... sometimes matching it ... but always complimenting it.

Enjoy watching the clip. And, remember: 'Tain't What You Do, It's The Way That You Do It!' CLICK HERE TO ENJOY LISTENING TO THE SONG

Join us Wednesday for the return of
Carl Sonny Leyland
This is truly a RARE appearance!

RSVP ON FACEBOOK HERE

It has been so long that Carl Sony Leland has played at our club, I honestly can't remember when it was! The big problem in getting him over to Rusty's is that he lives far out of town. But, we lucked out this time, and we've got him thanks to the Sweet & Hot Festival (where he'll be playing this weekend, so don't miss that, either). He's staying in town a couple extra days to make this singular appearance at Rusty's.

AND... ALL-STAR LINEUP ...

Piano: Carl Sonny Leyland
Drums: Hal Smith
Clarinet: Chloe Feoranzo
Bass: Wally Hersom

aCARL SONNY LEYLAND BIO
Visit his website

Carl Sonny Leyland was born & raised on the South Coast of England, growing up close to the city of Southampton. As a child he was drawn to the American music which he heard on LP records his father would play. It was here that he developed an appreciation for Dixieland jazz, the rock & roll of the 1950s & the country music of Jimmie Rodgers & Hank Williams.

At age 15 Leyland discovered boogie woogie when he heard a school friend working through a written arrangement of a tune called JD's Boogie Woogie (Marvin Wright). Captivated by the sound of the repeating 8 to the bar left hand pattern, Leyland was inspired to go to the piano & begin on a path that would become his life's purpose. Within 3 months he would be performing in public & shortly after would become a member of a respected local group "The Bob Pearce Blues Band."

Initially influenced by boogie woogie greats Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson & Meade 'Lux' Lewis, Leyland went on to fully explore the piano blues genre, becoming an authority on early & obscure styles such as those played by Cow Cow Davenport, Little Brother Montgomery, Montana Taylor & Speckled Red to name a few.

In 1988 Leyland had the opportunity to come to the USA. This initial visit to New Orleans inspired him to relocate to that city where he would spend the next nine years. During that time he was active on the club scene, quickly gaining a reputation for his authentic blues & early rock & roll stylings. Also, he toured with the Dallas based band Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets whose line up included blues great Sam Myers.

In 1997, feeling the need for a change, Leyland relocated to Southern California. He joined Big Sandy & His Flyrite Boys, the well known rockabilly & western swing group & toured with them for over three years.

By this time his repertoire had expanded to include ragtime & early jazz styles which enabled him to become part of the traditional jazz scene around Los Angeles & San Diego. In June of 2003 the Carl Sonny Leyland Trio was formed with drummer Hal Smith & bassist Marty Eggers. There was such a natural synergy between the three musicians that a recording of their first performance was good enough to issue on a cd (Broadway Boogie - now out of print) Their versatile combination has proven successful over the years. They have recorded six cds to date (including a collaboration with Nathan James & Ben Hernandez) & continue to work steadily on the festival scene.

Leyland has also continued his involvement with the rockabilly scene & plays each year in the backing band at Viva Las Vegas & more recently at the Rockabilly Rave USA. In this capacity he has worked with such notables as Janis Martin, Ruth Brown, Billy Lee Riley & Carl Mann. (See 'Career History' page for a complete list of artists).

Whether playing solo or with his trio, Leyland's playing displays an infectious spontaneity, providing plenty of surprises for the listener. While he possesses the necessary vocabulary to pay tribute to the greats of old, he refuses to be limit himself to this & prefers to let each performance be an opportunity to say something new.

Chazz Young jumps for joy

Chazz Young & Virginie Jensen

Chazz does it all - tap, jazz, and lindy hop. He is also Frankie Manning's son and worked for years in Norma Miller's dance troupe. He's got quite the legacy. Dancing here with French (living in Bay Area) dancer, Virginie Jensen, this is truly a sumptuous social dance display.

CATALINA SWING DANCE FESTIVAL!
November 18-20, 2011

26 MILES ACROSS THE SEA...
SANTA CATALINA IS WAITING FOR THEE
(pardon the paraphrasing)

The Catalina Swing Dance Festival will feature:
* Non-Stop Live Music *
* World Class Instructors/Performers *
* Dance Workshops for All Levels *

a

I want to give my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION for Joel Ply's Catalina Swing Dance Festival. To spend three days on that beautiful island in swing heaven, well, what can I say?

As all this takes place 26 miles across the sea, the price is a bit higher than other camps, but well worth it! And you'll never regret it. Joel has set up a payment plan this year, so you can portion out your camp fees.

Last year, a bunch of Lindy by the Sea students got a house together, which is much more affordable that hotels. So start coordinating!!

See you there!

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.

Email me or call 310 606 5606. I'll do everything I can to keep dancing in your life.
