CELEBRATE FRANKIE MANNING
OUR GRANDDADDY OF LINDY HOP

t

Frankie Manning was indisputably the man who inspired generations of Lindy Hoppers back in the 1930s, 1940s, AND 1980s, 1990s, 2000s - including me!

Not only was he one of the dance's greatest innovators and performers, he also had the most generous spirit in sharing the dance with new generations of lindy hoppers.

t

He was born on May 26, 1914, so it's definitely time to celebrate the man and his dance.

I started dancing the Lindy Hop in 1996 and met Frankie right away. The Stevens Sisters (PBDA) were one of his greatest champions and brought him out from New York several times a year for all of us locals.

I always thrilled at the opportunity to dance with him, hang out with him, and hear his delightful and often hilarious reminiscences.

Until the end of his life, he had a hug that could break you in two, crunching every bone in your body... something I always looked forward to with glee! No one could hug like Frankie!!! I can still see his beaming smile as he strode toward me, and me prepping for that bear hug. He'll always be in my heart.

For those of you who never got to meet him, take a break and enjoy the beautiful tribute video that's our Clip of the Week. He's your dance granddaddy, too, even though you never knew him. He would have wanted to know you!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRANKIE!

FRANKIE MANNING
THE AMBASSADOR OF SWING
a short bio...

Swing dancer extraordinaire Frankie Manning was a leading dancer at Harlem's legendary Savoy Ballroom where, in the mid-1930s, he revolutionized the course of the lindy hop with his innovations, including the lindy air step and synchronized ensemble lindy routine. As a featured dancer and chief choreographer for the spectacular Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, he performed in numerous films (including Hellzapoppin'), and entertained on stages around the world with jazz greats Ethel Waters, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Cab Calloway.

Upon the demise of the Swing Era, Frankie took a job in the Post Office, where he worked for thirty years until his rediscovery by a new generation of swing dance enthusiasts in the mid-1980s. Since then, he was in constant demand and motion, teaching, choreographing, and performing globally. He won a 1989 Tony Award for his choreography in Black and Blue, and served as a consultant for and performed in Spike Lee's Malcolm X (watch Denzil Washington doing the lindy hop!).

Frankie's activities have been chronicled in hundreds of articles (including features in GQ and People) and dozens of news programs (including a profile on ABC's 20/20). Considered the world's leading authority on the lindy, he is highlighted in Ken Burns's acclaimed documentary, Jazz. His autobiography, Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop, co-written by Cynthia R. Millman, was published by Temple University Press in spring 2007.

See you on the dance floor!

Politicians from all over the world
should dig this wonderful scene
to see how well everybody gets along
on the dance floor.

VINTAGE! At the Italian American Museum
Saturday, June 11

On Saturday, June 11, 2011, the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles will present Vintage!, a fun-filled evening of living history organized to benefit the Museum and continued preservation efforts of the building it calls home: the Italian Hall. Built in 1908, the Italian Hall is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places and is the oldest remaining structure from the city’s little Italy.

Vintage! will feature live music and dancing by the swing sensations Big Lucky, Gatsby era cocktails, delectable cuisine, a vintage fashion show and costume contest, performance by the 1920s revival group the Atomic Cherry Bombs and presentation on the Museum’s design and historic preservation goals.

Proving true to its name, Vintage! will take place in one of Los Angeles’ most historic and architecturally significant locations, the 1869 Pico House and its charming cobblestone plaza.

For more information please call 213.485.8432.

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.
