Rusty, Ron, & LBS Tuesday Nite Students featured on El Segundo TV!

Back in January of this year, El Segundo TV came on over to see what we're up to. The TV program is called "Insight" - and we became a featured segment.

The seven minute segment features an interview with me, and then some fun with our Tuesday night class. They interviewed a few students and showed all of us dancing up a storm.

Thank you all for really showing the fun of what we do!

Dancing for TCM with Vince Giordano
Wow!

A couple months ago, I was contacted by Turner Classic Movies (TCM) to put together a group of Lindy Hoppers for their upcoming 2nd Annual Classic Film Festival to take place in Hollywood. Working together with my good swing pal, Minn Vo, we put together a group of stellar dancers, consisting of both professionals and social dancers, and including many award-winning individuals!

Last Friday night, twenty of us got to be the dancing stars at the TCM gala dance event at the historic Music Box Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Vince Giordano And His Nighthawks (from New York) provided the music for our dancing feet.

We did a show for the folks, too -- I tapped dance, and our gang did the 1930's Big Apple (choreographed by Frankie Manning).

It's a night we'll long remember!

For any of you old movie buffs out there, I also got to enjoy much of the festival, seeing the classic movies on the big screens of the Grauman's Egyptian and Chinese theatres, and seeing many film stars in person, including Peter O'Toole, Mickey Rooney, Jane Powell, Haley Mills, and Angela Landsbury.

Fun at the Blessing of the Hair last Sunday

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out at "The Blessing of the Hair" vintage day over at Ultra Lux. It was a lovely spring day, and we all had such a good time hanging out together AND spreading the good word of Lindy Hop.

Special thanks to Marc Nuno (not pictured) for bringing everything over in his truck and then schlepping it back, and to all the volunteers who helped at our booth and in the dance lesson: Rachel, Nuria, Mike, Mikey, Danielle, Carrie, David, Miss Pat, and Sonia.

If you know of an outdoor festival where we could have a presence, send me an email.

Thanks for your encouragement on the newsletter
I appreciate it!

something

I know you all think I just dance dance dance dance dance day and night. But the sad truth is that the dancing is only about 10% of my business life. Most of the time is sitting by myself in my office doing just what most everyone does -- office work. (Violins, please).

something

One of the jobs that takes the most time, creativity, and energy, is the weekly newsletter.

For me, "Rusty's Rhythm Report" means so much because I look at it as a chance to build community, educate, and inspire all of us. A lot of research goes into finding interesting quotes, clips, and local events. It takes me anywhere from 2-5 hours to write the report each week.

Every now and then I think about letting it go, but then I get an email that encourages me to keep it all going. Here's a few that came in recently.

Thanks, folks, I really do appreciate it!

Some Nice Emails:

Good morning Rusty :)

This is Stacy in your Thurs night classes....started in April.

I just LOVE your Rhythm Report! :-) I have been on your mailing list for quite a while, long before I started your classes, and it just brightens my week, every Saturday!!

Have a great day! :)

Hi Rusty,

If there were an award for best swing dance newsletter, you would win it hands down.

The content and presentation are tops.

The effort you put into it is appreciated.

Gene

Rusty, I'm so glad the newsletter is back. It's an essential part of my Saturday breakfast.

See you on the dance floor!

"While I dance I can not judge,
I can not hate,
I can not separate myself from life.
I can only be joyful and whole.
This is why I dance."

Now, that's smooth dancing!

I love looking around YouTube for clips I've not seen before, and just today I chanced upon this beautiful clip. In our Master Track this week, we talked about changing your dancing from a series of moves to a flow of a dance.

I think this is one of the best examples of joyful flow I can imagine.

JACK & JILL WORKSHOP
Click HERE for info and registration

We have so many students who have been entering Jack and Jill contests, and many more who want to, that we knew it was time to do our fabulous and fun workshop.

Whether or not you'll ever compete, this workshop will give you great tips on bringing your social dancing up to the next level.

As Jack and Jill contests are basically one big fun social dance, and you are judged on "The Three Ts - Timing, Teamwork, and Technique" - this workshop will focus on all those essential parts of swing dancing... PLUS some great tips on how to have a chance of staying in that contest longer.

Ron and Rusty both have loads of experience on both sides of the contest spectrum - both as competitors and judges, respectively. They know what the judges are looking for, and just how to enjoy the contest.

Continuing on with Balboa for May... it's just too much fun. (And you're just getting it!)

Balboa today is commonly used as a general term for dances that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s. It is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and gained in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s.

The art of Balboa is in the subtle communication between the lead and follow, including weight shifts, which most viewers cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a "dancer's dance" than a "spectator's dance".

Balboa is danced to a wide variety of tempos. Because the basic step takes up such a small space, Balboa can be danced to fast music (over 300 beats per minute). Balboa is also danced to slow music (under 100 beats per minute), which allows more time for intricate footwork and variations.

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.
