Music! Dance! Music! - Aren't We Lucky

Living right in the middle of the "entertainment capital of the world," we get awfully spoiled with the caliber of swing bands right at our door. Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves to believe that it's really right in our own venues - the best of the best. Last week at Rusty's, with Dean Mora's Swingtet, was a perfect example.

Well... one of the greatest vintage bands in the land is making a rare trip to Los Angeles next Friday. If you're of a mind... meet me there!

VINCE GIORDANO MAKES A RARE L.A. APPEARANCE
FRIDAY, APRIL 29

Vince plays every week in Manhattan - and plays the fantastic original 1920s & 1930s music we love.

It's all part of the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival next week.

I'll be there performing a little tap number during the dance, so come along and join me. And The Hollywood Hotshots and a few more will be there as "Taxi Dancers" -- so you're guaranteed some nice dance partners. It's open to the public... but I would suggest getting there early, in case it sells out. $20 cover, sorry only 18 and up.

STEVEN SMITH - THE GENTLEMAN OF SWING

"WHAT THE WELL-DRESSED SWING MAN WILL WEAR"

Steven Smith shirts

My hero! Steven Smith is simply one of the most delightful dancers on our scene. He always makes the follow comfortable and dances so beautifully to the music. When his name was brought up in class, all the girls sighed - "He's so lovely to dance with!"

When I saw him walk into Rusty's last Wednesday, I couldn't resist taking this picture, because it shows another reason why we gals enjoy dancing with him. He brings THREE shirts! He knows he's going to dance up a storm and work up a "glow", so he's ready with not one, but two dry shirts to change into as the evening gets hot. This week, his shirts matched... and we can find him as the evening goes on. What a guy!

Yes, I know we suggest (highly) to all our leaders that they bring 2-3 extra shirts for an evening of swing dancing. But, how many follow our advice? "I don't sweat," they say. Ah! We gals know better as you walk up to us soaked through with sweat. Ugh.

So, follow the "Gentleman of Swing" and bring a few extra shirts, or undershirts. And gals, we can do same.

This is just one tasty Lindy Hop performance number. What I love about it especially is the musicality. Enjoy the clip!

JACK & JILL WORKSHOP
Click HERE for info and registration

We have so many students who have been entering Jack and Jill contests, and many more who want to, that we knew it was time to do our fabulous and fun workshop.

Whether or not you'll ever compete, this workshop will give you great tips on bringing your social dancing up to the next level.

As Jack and Jill contests are basically one big fun social dance, and you are judged on "The Three Ts - Timing, Teamwork, and Technique" - this workshop will focus on all those essential parts of swing dancing... PLUS some great tips on how to have a chance of staying in that contest longer.

Ron and Rusty both have loads of experience on both sides of the contest spectrum - both as competitors and judges, respectively. They know what the judges are looking for, and just how to enjoy the contest.

Continuing on with Balboa for May... it's just too much fun. (And you're just getting it!)

Balboa today is commonly used as a general term for dances that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s. It is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and gained in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s.

The art of Balboa is in the subtle communication between the lead and follow, including weight shifts, which most viewers cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a "dancer's dance" than a "spectator's dance".

Balboa is danced to a wide variety of tempos. Because the basic step takes up such a small space, Balboa can be danced to fast music (over 300 beats per minute). Balboa is also danced to slow music (under 100 beats per minute), which allows more time for intricate footwork and variations.

Founder and band leader Vince Giordano began his professional career as a teenager, learning how to capture the sound of the 1920s from the legendary William Challis, one of the preeminent arrangers of the Jazz Age. A consummate showman, Vince plays tuba, string bass, bass saxophone, banjo, guitar and drums—and is the band’s lead vocalist.

Vince Giordano has also been invited to perform at the Smithsonian, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and jazz festivals around the world. Early appearances with Leon Redbone and A Prairie Home Companion and lending his talents to Francis Ford Coppola's film The Cotton Club (1984), led to working with Dick Hyman's orchestra in half a dozen Woody Allen soundtracks. He and band were featured in Gus Van Sant's film Finding Forrester (2000); in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator (2004); Robert DeNiro's film, The Good Shepherd (2006); Tamara Jenkins' film, The Savages (2007), Sam Mendes' films Revolutionary Road (2008) and Away We Go (2009) along with Michael Mann's film Public Enemies (2009). LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.
