Where's Rusty? - China!
Teaching Tap Dancing and Meeting Swing Dancers

A couple of years ago, I got an order for my Shim Sham Shimmy tap DVD through my online store. I couldn't help but notice that the order came all the way from Shanghai, China from a man named Jiefang Chen. Then in January of this year, I read a wonderful article in the International Tap Association newsletter by him about how he used the Shim Sham routine to take people from total beginners to competent tappers in three months. He went on to write how difficult it is for Chinese to get the jazzy swing rhythms (because the music is so foreign to them), but that the Shim Sham really helps make it all possible because of the swing in its rhythms. He also explained how he was fighting an uphill battle teaching "American Tap," as most Chinese think Irish dancing is tap, because the show "Riverdance" went all around China. But, he was on a mission!

I was really touched by Jiefang's article, so I wrote to him and told him if there was anything I could do to help him, please just let me know.

He then sent me this video, I hit play, and started watching the movie. I instantly started crying and couldn't stop. I watched it again, and the same thing happened again. I found myself crying. What the heck was happening?

Click on the photograph to see the video Jiefang sent me!
Jiefang is the on in front with the striped shirt.

I realized that quite a lot was hitting me all at once:

~ I was just deeply touched by the utter joy I was seeing on their faces.

~ I couldn't believe that they were doing this as a result of my decision to make a video back in 1994 to preserve this historic tap dance!

~ And, finally, they were doing, well, me! They had been watching the DVD so much, they had captured my style, arms, expression and so on. It was so odd to see, and at the same time made me realize how hard they had worked to get there.

I was in love!! With all of these students!!! I had to meet them.

I contacted Jiefang and asked if he would be interested in me coming over there to teach? It would be my personal "cultural exchange program." Bring American Rusty Frank Style Tap to China! I had been hoarding my frequent flyer miles for a special occasion, and I figured this was just the ticket. I could donate my services in exchange for home-hospitality and some sightseeing.

He wrote back within hours and asked, "How's March?"

So here you are reading this story, and there I am in China teaching right this very minute (or with the time change, somewhere around now!)

I am also looking forward to meeting the swing dancers in Shanghai. I have already made contact and found out when their dances are held. Oh, boy, oh, boy!

I'll have access to email, but no Facebook in China.

I know I'll have a lot of stories to tell you when I get back.

See you on April 6th at Rusty's!!!!

IMPORTANT!

Yes, Ron & Gio at LBS and the gang at Rusty's will be keeping things going in my absence. Make sure you show up! And I thank you in advance for that.

Shim Sham At The Great Wall of China

This was filmed in 2009 as part of a surprise for Frankie Manning - people all around the world filmed themselves doing the Shim Sham, and it was all edited together in one clip. Here's the group from China.

I also love this one done by my friend in Singapore, Sing Lim:

TAP FOR LINDY HOPPERS!
with Rusty Frank

I often get asked to teach tap dancing by Lindy Hoppers. I fashioned some material that is wonderfully accessible for social dancers and to really help them (YOU!) get their feet moving, while at the same time learning the basics of tap dance.

You can be a total tap beginner, or even have a little background, and you're certain to enjoy this workshop.

QUESTION:
"WILL TAP HELP MY LINDY?"

ANSWER:
"YES!"

I get asked that question often, and I can say that tap dancing will definitely help your dancing. How? It will get you moving your feet more intricately and learning some nifty syncopations that you can put in your dancing.

Balboa today is commonly used as a general term for dances that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s. It is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and gained in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s.

The art of Balboa is in the subtle communication between the lead and follow, including weight shifts, which most viewers cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a "dancer's dance" than a "spectator's dance".

Balboa is danced to a wide variety of tempos. Because the basic step takes up such a small space, Balboa can be danced to fast music (over 300 beats per minute). Balboa is also danced to slow music (under 100 beats per minute), which allows more time for intricate footwork and variations.

A Grand Night Out

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.
