Life Imitates Art

"The Penguin Charleston"

Gio and I were performing at the G2 Gallery last Saturday, and were caught by photographer Christa Holmes imitating the Penguin Portrait at the gallery. I always wondered where Shadow (aka Back, aka Tandem) Charleston came from!

Speaking of the G2 Gallery Gig...
Thanks to all our students who were indeed
"The Life of the Party"!

We had such a great time dancing in the G2 Gallery, and all of the students who showed up were the real stars! People couldn't stop commenting on how great all you dancers were. They loved your dancing and your spirit. The true spirit of Lindy Hop.

We also had a special treat with Gio's wife, Akiko, and baby Mi-chan in attendance.

I recommend...
Professional Dancers Society Luncheon
&
Balboa Rendezvous

In our Added Attractions I have put information about two upcoming events. I really recommend both of these to you.

The first is the Professional Dancers Society Luncheon. This organization is near and dear to my hear, and I am on the board of directors. PDS raises money for dancers in need. When I broke my neck, they were one of the first calls offering help that I got.

Take a look at the info below, and seriously think about going. It's a tax right-off AND an amazing "old Hollywood" event. Where else can you see Mitzi Gaynor and Dick Van Dyke perform together these days?????

They also offer a dessert and coffee only price.

The Balboa Rendezvous is simply one of the all-time great events, and it's held right in San Diego. Try, try, try to go if you can!

Thanks for the compliment, Gene!

I got the nicest email from Gene Hashiguchi last Saturday, and I just had to share it with you. It really made me feel good. I put a lot of time, thought, and care into these newsletters... all in the hopes of building community, expanding knowledge, and, in general, sharing my love of this thing called dance. So I truly appreciate it when I get little emails and compliments along the way. It just makes me happy to know people are out there enjoying the read.

And... here's the note:

Hi Rusty,

If there were an award for best swing dance newsletter, you would win it hands down.

The content and presentation are tops.

The effort you put into it is appreciated.

Gene

See you on the dance floor!

"Dance is your pulse, your heartbeat, your breathing. It's the rhythm of your life. It's the expression in time and movement, in happiness, joy, sadness and envy."

Jean Veloz - One Girl & Two Boys

Since we worked on a Jean Veloz styling in class last week, I thought it would be fun to post a fabulous Jean clip this week.

Jean Veloz (Jeanne Phelps) is featured here dancing with Don Gallager & Lenny Smith in this delightful number "One Girl and Two Boys," sung by Marilyn Maxwell with Kay Kyser's band from "Swing Fever" (1944).

TAP FOR LINDY HOPPERS!
with Rusty Frank

I often get asked to teach tap dancing by Lindy Hoppers. I fashioned some material that is wonderfully accessible for social dancers and to really help them (YOU!) get their feet moving, while at the same time learning the basics of tap dance.

You can be a total tap beginner, or even have a little background, and you're certain to enjoy this workshop.

QUESTION:
"WILL TAP HELP MY LINDY?"

ANSWER:
"YES!"

I get asked that question often, and I can say that tap dancing will definitely help your dancing. How? It will get you moving your feet more intricately and learning some nifty syncopations that you can put in your dancing.

Balboa today is commonly used as a general term for dances that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s. It is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and gained in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s.

The art of Balboa is in the subtle communication between the lead and follow, including weight shifts, which most viewers cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a "dancer's dance" than a "spectator's dance".

Balboa is danced to a wide variety of tempos. Because the basic step takes up such a small space, Balboa can be danced to fast music (over 300 beats per minute). Balboa is also danced to slow music (under 100 beats per minute), which allows more time for intricate footwork and variations.

A Grand Night Out

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.
