Tragedy of the First Position
A Dancer's Determination!

Ahhhhhhh.....

I must have now watched this clip about 20 times. This short clip of a tiny tot trying to manage the "First Position" in her ballet class, just has touched me so sweetly. Her determination, apparently against all odds, to get into that 1st Position is awe-inspiring. It also reminds me of myself every time I learn a new dance move. Maybe you'll see yourself?

I also love the calmness and encouragement of the teacher, especially when she says, "It's okay if your shoes aren't doing it. Don't worry, okay?" How she puts the problem on the shoes and not the student. You just might me hear me say that in future in class, "It's okay if your shoes aren't doing a triple step, kick ball-change. Don't worry, okay?"

Love it!

P.S. If you have any doubt about my journey, watch my ballet recital from when I was seven. I love watching this clip of myself, because it shows my determination and evidence of my journey. See my discourse on "Nobody's A Natural Born Dancer"

Good-bye John Mills

One of our legendary swing dancers, John Mills, passed away last week at the age of 99. He will long be remembered for his winning smile, graceful slides, and his creation of the standard Lindy and Balboa move - "Johnny's Drop."

I had the great opportunity to get to know John and dance with him often. From age 92-94, John came to Rusty's almost weekly, astounding everyone with his still present awesome dancing.

John Mills RonWhen Ron and I were in the midst of filming our Track Series DVD set, we got the brainstorm to have John come in and personally demonstrate his move. A phone call later, John was standing in the studio in El Segundo, dressed to the nines, and with his ever-present smile.

Thank goodness for this, because now we have him recorded for posterity and his glowing personality will live on and on and on.

And, as long as we all do Johnny's Drop, John Mills lives!

If you never got to see John dance, click HERE to see him at Rusty's some few years ago. You'll also see legendary swing goddess Jean Veloz at the beginning dancing with Gio. John was a mere kid at this time, only 93.

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.
