Tap dancing... you get out there and it goes. You have to do it from your toes to the last tips of your hair. You have to dance all over. I think the reason I loved tap dancing is that I love the music. And I hear the beat.... You only have two feet and four taps to make magic, you know. And you can make magic with it.

TAP DAY - WHAT IS IT?
WHERE'S RUSTY
Tap dancing was my first dance. I started at 6, and was totally captivated by the dance, the rhythms, and the history. But, I had always hidden the fact that I tapped, from the time I was six until I went to college. Tap had gone out of popularity. So the late 1980's were exciting times, because tap dancing was finally getting recognized for what it was -- a great American artform.
I happened to be in Washington, D.C. working on my book when the Tap Bill was passed, and I remember getting the call and jumping into a cab to go over to John Conyers' office (one of the Bill's sponsors). Wish I had had my camera with me then! Yes, those were exciting times.
So won't you join me in raising a glass to Tap Dance and maybe even popping in your favorite tap dance movie -- Fred Astaire, Shirley Temple, Bill Robinson, The Nicholas Brothers, Ann Miller, Gregory Hines, Eleanor Powell....
I'll be in Arizona all weekend celebrating there with some of the most amazing tap dancers on the planet.
Happy Tap Day, everyone!
TAP DAY BILL
HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 131
Introduced by John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI)
SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 53
Introduced by Alfonse D'Amato (R-NY)
TO DESIGNATE MAY 25 AS NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY
Whereas
the multifaceted art form of tap dancing is a manifestation of the cultural heritage of our Nation, reflecting the fusion of African and European cultures into an exemplification of the American spirit, that should be, through documentation, and archival and performance support, transmitted to succeeding generations;
Whereas
tap dancing has had an historic and continuing influence on other genres of American art, including music, vaudeville, Broadway musical theater, and film, as well as other dance forms;
Whereas
tap dancing is a joyful and powerful aesthetic force providing a source of enjoyment and an outlet for creativity and self-expression for Americans on both the professional and amateur level;
Whereas
it is in the best interest of the people of our Nation to preserve, promote, and celebrate this uniquely American art form;
Whereas
Bill "Bojangles" Robinson made an outstanding contribution to the art of tap dancing on both stage and film through the unification of diverse stylistic and racial elements.
Whereas
May 25, as the anniversary of the birth of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is an appropriate day on which to refocus the attention of the Nation on American tap dancing: Now therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that May 25, 1989 is designated "National Tap Dance Day." The President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such a day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER! WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU
Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers.
I wonder why.
Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.
If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away.
We can work something out! Here's some options:
~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.
~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.
~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.
~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!
I know that dancing really helps in hard times.
So don't be a stranger!
We'll work it out to meet your needs.
