I, of course, wanted to play real jazz. When we played pop tunes, and naturally we had to, I wanted those pops to kick! Not loud and fast, understand, but smoothly and with a definite punch.

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S BEEN TWELVE YEARS!
Lindy By The Sea & Rusty's Rhythm Club founded 1998!

HOW DID IT ALL START?

It was back in May of 1998 that I was asked to teach a weekly Wednesday swing dance class at Point 705 in Hermosa Beach. It was one of those fateful stories... right time right place... just deciding to go out the front door making all the difference.

I had come back to America, after a two-year stint dancing with Simon Selmon in Europe, and was out dancing one January in 1998 at the world famous Derby. At this time, swing dancing was riding the crest of the resurgence wave of popularity, and the Derby was packed nightly.

Magician Brian Gillis was there with a group of friends. We had some super fun dances, and he took my card with the idea of taking private dance lessons with his girlfriend.

Jump forward some months. I get a call from Brian, "My friends are opening a new restaurant and want to have a swing night. I told them about you... ya wanna teach a class there on Wednesdays?" Well, the rest, as they say, is now swing dance history. I had since teamed up with Peter Flahiff, and he and I hosted the weekly dance there until we moved to our current Rhythm Club location in 2001.

During our first months at 705, people repeatedly asked us to start some on-going lessons. Our first location was Episcopal by the Sea (thereby getting our name, Lindy By The Sea). We later moved to The Neptunian Women's Club, and then to our current location at Rebekah Lodge.

Peter moved on at the end of 2002, and Ron Campbell and Giovanni Quintero joined the teaching team at the start of 2003. The years have flown by with these two delightful, talented, and often zany gentlemen of swing.

How many people have passed through the doors of Lindy By The Sea and the Rhythm Club? Literally thousands. And they keep on comin' through these doors.

LET'S PARTY! GEORGE GEE! THE HOLLYWOOD HOTSHOTS!....
and...
NANCY MAGNANTE'S DESSERT BUFFET!

What better way to celebrate an anniversary than with a big PARTY. Boy, oh boy, we've got that. With George Gee all the way from New York (and celebrating the 30th anniversary of his band and his 50th birthday), that would be enough...

But, no! We've got more. The fabulous performance team, The Hollywood Hotshots" will be dazzling us all during the band break...

And, wait, there's more! Nancy Magnante, who has coordinated two amazing dessert buffets (one for our New Year's Party and the other for our Hop For Haiti), is at it again for our 12 Year Anniversary Party. Yum, yum, yummy.

Looking forward to celebrating 12 years of Lindy Hop with everyone!

TUESDAY'S 8:00 FEATURED CLASS
"CONNECTION & STYLING"

Our dedicated student, Terry Fuller, came up with this idea for a series, and it was unanamously supported by the Tuesday nighters.

We all know good dancers when we see them. But what makes them great? There are many elements, but two of the most important are their connection and their styling.

The connection between dancers (lead and follow) is what makes those magic three minutes - when you run off the floor in glee extoling, "That was the best dance ever!"

Come along to this class where we will explore the intricacies of what makes lead and follow work, and how to add on styling without interfering with the connection.

We invite anyone from Level 3 on up to join this special series on Connection & Styling in Lindy Hop.

START DATES FOR THE NEXT SERIES:
TUESDAYS: APRIL 6
THURSDAYS: APRIL 8

DEMENTIA - HOW TO AVOID IT

LOOK WHAT MADE #4
DANCE LESSONS!

Are you like me, and starting to forget a little something here, a little something there? Can't recall someone's name? Wonder why you came into in the kitchen?

We always think of loss of memory as something that happens to grandma and grandpa. Well, apparently, it starts quite early. Experts say that if you really want to ward off dementia, you need to start taking care of your brain in your 30s and or even earlier.

So what can you do to beef up your brain – and possibly ward off dementia?

Among other things - TAKE DANCE LESSONS!

Yes, you read right. Dance lessons made it to #4 on the list of 20 things you can do to stave off dementia.

For those of you who want to read the whole list and an interesting article in the Seattle Times, CLICK HERE.

But here's #4:

4.*Take dance lessons*. In a study of nearly 500 people, dancing was the only regular physical activity associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. The people who danced three or four times a week showed 76% less incidence of dementia than those who danced only once a week or not at all.

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.
