RUSTY'S 2009 THANK YOU LIST

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING OUR SWING DANCE SCENE SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE!

All throughout the year I am so grateful for what we have here in the South Bay -- one of the friendliest swing dance scenes I've ever seen. Of course, it's because of your spirit... how you always welcome newcomers, how you have the social dancing "spirit", how there is always a smile on your face on that dance floor, and how we always have such fun.

THANKS TO MY "RHYTHM PALS"!
GIOVANNI QUINTERO & RON CAMPBELL

SEVEN YEARS WITH LINDY BY THE SEA!

Gio & Ron add beyond description to our Lindy By The Sea program.

Gio's boundless enthusiasm makes every Thursday an absolute joy-ride for our new students. His ongoing presence at the Rhythm Club, dancing with all the followers and kidding around with all the leaders, makes him a real pal!

Ron's true partnership in developing our Tuesday nite programs, The Track and The Master Track, have brought the highest level of instruction to Lindy By The Sea. His ability to clearly and intelligently break down all sorts of moves, and the specific mechanics of what makes the moves work, is something treasured by all.

Both of these gentlemen of swing have made my life such a pleasure. Something that might become tedious (teaching triple step, triple step, rock step for the umpteenth time) is always such fun with these guys around!

Thank you, Ron & Gio, for your spirit and your friendship.

ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS!

I know I could never run Lindy By The Sea and Rusty's Rhythm Club without the tremendous help of all the volunteers who pitch right in. From you students who help set up and breakdown Rebekah Hall each week to all those at the Rhythm Club who make sure things run smoothly. Some of them you know and some of them are hidden beyond the scenes... but all of you make all of this crazy stuff possible!

Robert "The Professor" Vangor, our amazing Rhythm Club "House DJ" who keeps us all dancing to the best of swing music from his tremendous collection

Swing Shift Rhythm Club, All our volunteers who bring joy and happiness to those in hospitals and senior homes. And a special thanks to Rita and Debbie for organizing all these events! And I thank Jessica, Capt Fun for all their past work.

Peter Livingston, our "Door Stop Captain" who also helps set up the Rhythm Club each week.

Jessica Densmore, for always being there at the Rhythm Club as a regular "Door Stop."

Raymond Manning, for being there each week to set up the club (what would I do without him setting up those heavy speakers) and now djing the early part of the evening.

Jon Moody, for always being there to help us break down the Rhythm Club each week.

John Lau, our most recent addition to our terrific "Door Stop" team.

Nancy Magnante, Steven Smith, Michelle Guy, and Shane Mast for helping me plan our first New Year's Swing Dance Party.

Door Stops, there are so many of you who sit at that Rhythm Club door to greet everyone... sometimes just for a minute, sometimes for much more...

Maxwell DeMille, for adding his special brand of pep as our special guest Master of Ceremonies.

Stanley Sheff, our amazing web host and designer.

USC Swing Dance Club, All the officers and enthusiasts for getting college students excited about swing dancing... and getting them out on the dance floor!

All those at Rebekah Hall and the Elks Lodge, you always make us feel welcome and provide us with such a homey and friendly environ in which to dance.

Everyone(!) I have forgotten to name here!

AND, OF COURSE, ALL THE GREAT BANDS!

Just in case you can't remember,
here's a list of all the bands that played at the Rhythm Club in 2009!

Big Lucky
Fabulous Esquires

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER!
WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU

Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers. I wonder why. Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.

If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away. We can work something out! Here's some options:

~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.

~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.

~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.

I know that dancing really helps in hard times. So don't be a stranger! We'll work it out to meet your needs.

A GREAT LETTER FROM FORMER STUDENT

This email came in from former Lindy By The Sea student, Cheryll Lynn, who now lives in New York. She was responding the NY Times article in last week's Rhythm Report about the man with cerebral palsy who is finding relief through dancing.

Hey Rusty,

Just read this weeks attached article about the fellow with C.P. Wonderfully inspiring. It reminded me of your halo dancing days and how the doctor said that doing that may have very well helped with aspects of your recovery. Ive been dancing all these years despite the doctors who told me I shouldnt (havent seen any of those doctors in years!). To any degree, small or large, start dancing and keep dancing! The Charleston routine put a big smile on my face as well. I loved doing the routine classes.

Oh! And your NY Times article prompted me to send you this link of me & Scott dancing to Vince Giordanos Nighthawks:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/28/nyregion/28metjournal.html?_r=1 [NOTE: she was on vacation and didn't see that we had this article two weeks ago... but now we know it was her and Scott!]

Scott and I are in silhouette in the photograph, though my name is erroneously Liz Kemble (a friend of ours who had spoken to the photographer that evening). Were also in the video, a little farther down the page as well: around 1:00 to 1:10 you can see Scott briefly then me. We still dance to Vince every Monday night were in town!

Enjoy!
Cheryll

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
