FRED ASTAIRE - SIGH

Last night, in our Balboa class, we got to talking about Fred Astaire. How did he come up in the conversation? We were doing "Maxie's Move," where you do a graceful slide at the end (look at the Picture of the week, it kind of looks like that -- one can only try, eh). So we got to talking about "line" (the shapes you make wit your body while dancing), and how to make the move look graceful at the end... and we said, "Think Fred Astaire." Nuff said, everyone looked great after that. They just all new instinctively what we meant. Astaire is simply the epitome of grace, style, and rhythm.

Ever since I saw my first Fred Astaire movie, I was madly enraptured. The way this man danced, even the way he walked, made me swoon. If anyone ever inspired me to become a dancer, Astaire was the one. Even today, all I have to do is look at a picture of him, and I want to jump out of my chair and start dancing.

What is it about the man that has engaged generation after generation? Well, that's easy, just look at our clip of the week and see for yourself. Then you can spend hours on YouTube watching the man dancing.

You'll be sighing, just like I am.

HALLOWEEN PARTY A FRIGHT

We had the best Halloween Party ever at Rusty's Rhythm Club! The turn out was great, and the costumes were truly amazing. It just seems to get better and better every year. I think our Halloween Conga Line will be a memory long in our happy hearts! Thanks to John Apodaca for arranging that.

Special thanks to Maxwell DeMille for being our special guest Costume Contest announcer, to Robert "The Professor" Vangor for bringing in some wonderfully Halloween-y tunes, and to the Fabulous Esquires for being truly fabulous.

Enjoy the pictures in our SCRAPBOOK and relive the night.

By popular vote, our costume contest winners were:

First Place - Zoltar
Shane Mast spent a month recreating this costume from the movie "Big."

Second Place - "That's Frahn-ken-stein!" and Elizabeth
Steven Smith and Michelle Guy
portraying Gene Wilder & Madeline Kahn from the movie "Young Frankenstein"

Third Place - Disneyland Matterhorn ride attendants
Steven & Stephanie

IT'S THIS WEDNESDAY!

See you on the dance floor!

Pick Yourself Up
Astaire & Rogers

This has always been, and always be, one of my favorite dance clips.

Bojangles of Harlem

This is my very favorite Astaire solo clip. He pays homage to Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and also does some wonderful special effects along the way (remember this was before CGI... Astaire did it all!) Rhythmically, this number just "sends me"! I vividly remember the first time I saw this in a movie theater, it took my breath away and at the end of the number my heart stood still. It still has the same affect on me.

If you don't have time to watch the whole clip and just want to forward to Astaire, go to 2:00.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
