ESPECIALLY PROUD OF DANCERS' PHILANTRPY

Since 2000, our Swing Shift Rhythm Club has been organizing philantropic dance events around Southern California. It couldn't make me more proud than to have our local dancers out there making the world a better place doing just what they love - dancing!

I have information on a newly announced event below at Ruby's for the Good Sheperd Shelter for Battered Women. If you've never been to one of the events, check it out. There's not that much that'll make you feel so good! You can see by the smiling faces in the picture above.

STAYING AS FRESH AS A DAISY ON THE DANCE FLOOR

It's come to my attention that I should bring this issue up for our classes and the club. So here's a gentle reminder to take what steps you need to smell fresh as a daisy on the dance floor.

This is one of the potentially awkward situations on the floor, as very few people have the guts to tell someone they smell bad. So I always advise take care of it all yourself, so you are a delight in every way on the dance floor.

Often times, people will say, "But I put on fresh clothes this morning," forgetting that a day of work and stress can change the odor to something not so pleasant. If you are coming straight from work, just pack a fresh shirt or two.

Carry breath mints or gum with you whenever you dance, just in case.

Avoid foods that will give you bad breath or body odor before you go out dancing. Sorry about the garlic... we all miss it.

Bring a change of shirts, and layer if you need.

Happy dancing!

MARK THOSE CALENDARS - HALLOWEEN PARTY AT RUSTY'S NEXT WEDNESDAY

How is this year flying by so quickly? Halloween already? You bet! And that means it's time for our annual Halloween Party at Rusty's Rhythm Club.

The perrenial question of newbies is, "Do people really dress up?". I have included the above picture of last year's gathering in answer!

For those first timers, we recommend making sure that you can swing dance in your costume. Avoid masks, swords, and wings.

Be creative as possible! It's always one of the highlights of our year.

See you on the dance floor!

LAST CONTEST

QUIZ:

We all know that Gene Kelly sang "Singin' In The Rain," but there were two other singers who sang it in earlier movies. Name one or both of the singers and the pictures.

ANSWER:

The song became a hit and was recorded by a number of artists, notably Cliff Edwards, who also performed the number in the early musical sound film The Hollywood Revue of 1929. It was also performed on film by Jimmy Durante (in 1932's Speak Easily) and Judy Garland (in 1940's Little Nellie Kelly).

WINNER:

Mariel Cisneros

*Contestants may play as many times as they wish, but may only win the prize once a year. Contestants must use their Rhythm Club pass for the week they won the contest.

THIS IN FROM CATHRYN SAYRE AKA "CAPT FUN"

Hello all,

I just want to share the wonderful letter that arrived from Sister Anne at the Good Shepherd Shelter. It really makes one take a moment after reading it to realize how very lucky we are, and just by our small act of kindness how we have effected other people.

Unfortunately, this is the last time there will be an event to support the Shelter, and it will be Fri Oct 30 at 630pm at the Ruby's in Redondo Beach. That is the last night of the Classic Car Show. We will dance for 30 min only. It would really be awesome to have a good crowd for the group picture that I always take to send to the Shelter. Please try to attend this last event.

I am going to be having shoulder surgery in December so my dancing has been put on the shelf for awhile.

I just want to say Thank you to everyone who has helped over the many months that we have been supporting the Shelter. This is such a great cause and in this economy, a much needed cause with the Government cutting all funding to the other shelters.

Please mark you calendars and try to come for the last dance.

Let me know if you would like to continue to raise money, gift cards etc for the Shelter. I am sure we can think of different ways to do so.

SPECIAL ON PRIVATE LESSONS WITH RUSTY

Have you ever wanted to take a private lesson with Rusty? It's one of the best ways to get a dancing "tune-up."

Normally $80/hour (for one or two people), there's now a special package:

          $80 for one lesson

          $75/ea for two lessons

          $70/ea for three lessons

Remember, you can share this lesson with another person. If you signed up for three lessons, they would only be $35 each! What a bargain.

Call me at 310 606 5606 to set yours up!

Diary of a Vintage Girl This is one of the most amazing vintage blogs I've ever seen. There is so much information about vintage and reproduction items, it's a treasure trove of info for all of us!

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
