DANCING - WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?

In all my years teaching dance, you'd be amazed how many excuses I get from people for why dancing is so hard for them: "I'm too tall," "I'm too short," "I'm too..." I just smile, knowing that they get to take the same journey that I and all dancers have taken to get proficient (and, yes, it's that same way you get to Carnegie Hall) - Practice. Practice. Practice.

How lucky we are that the way we get to "practice" is at all the fun dances around town!

When I hear the cascade of sweet excuses from various students, I often recall one man I met who had the best excuse in the world, but danced anyway and became one of the best the world has ever known - Peg Leg Bates.

I interviewed Peg Leg Bates for my book, "TAP! The Greatest Tap Dance Stars and Their Stories 1900-1955," back in the late 1980s. He told me how he lost his leg in a mill accident when he was just twelve years old. Despite that accident, he never imagined for a moment that he wouldn't continue dancing.

"After losing the leg, for some unknown reason I still wanted to dance. At first, I was walking around on crutches, and I started making musical rhythm with them. Then my uncle made me a peg leg. I removed the crutches and started walking and dancing on the peg leg. I just wanted to dance It was just something that I liked and something that I wanted to do... Being a kid, and a dumb kid at that, I didn't realize the importance of losing my leg. And I guess that was helpful."

So, what's the moral of the story? Maybe we all should find a little bit of our "dumb kid" and just go for it!

Remember, if Peg Leg Bates could tap dance on one leg and a peg, we can all dance on our two good legs!

Perhaps you are going to a dance, or seeing your dancing friends. I have printed plenty of extra postcards to get around town. If you like, pick some up tonight at the Rhythm Club or anytime at class. Thanks!

THE SWING KINGS IN BEVERLY HILLS THIS FRIDAY

Another swing dance venue is threatened. If you are of a mind, show up and support it to help keep it alive. This in from swing dancer Isabelle:

We are encouraging as many dancers as possible to patronize The Camden House on Friday evening, October 2nd, where the Swing Kings, an excellent live 9 piece band, will be playing from 9-12 PM for your dancing pleasure. It may be the last time.

The Camden House is a much nicer night club than The Derby was, and has some of the same features that The Coconut Club had; there is a large dance floor, there are many tables for dining, the Swing Kings played The Coconut Club regularly, the Camden House is centrally located on 430 N. Camden in Beverly Hills, and there is an excellent menu for your dining pleasure (you may want to make a reservation Tel: 310.285.9848). The Camden House's management will continue to support this dance venue twice monthly, ONLY IF there is a good turnout THIS Friday, Oct 2nd. Ample free parking. $10 cover for non-diners

SPECIAL ON PRIVATE LESSONS WITH RUSTY

Have you ever wanted to take a private lesson with Rusty? It's one of the best ways to get a dancing "tune-up."

Normally $80/hour (for one or two people), there's now a special package:

          $80 for one lesson

          $75/ea for two lessons

          $70/ea for three lessons

Remember, you can share this lesson with another person. If you signed up for three lessons, they would only be $35 each! What a bargain.

Call me at 310 606 5606 to set yours up!

VintageFashionExpo.comPeople often ask me where I get all my vintage clothing. Well, to be quite honest, one of the greatest places I know is the Vintage Fashion Expo. If I had a million dollars, I could easily spend it there on all the wonderful goodies. This amazing sale is happening October 17-18 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. If you look on the website, you'll even find a discount coupon for entry (print it out and bring it for a $5 off on the $10 entry).

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
