Mon Dieu! Celebrating Bastille Day
with a beautiful vintage Parisian swing photo

Dancing brings you into the present moment.
There's no past.
There's no future.
It's all about what's happening right now.
Someone right in front of you.
Holding on.
It's real.
It's all happening at that very moment.
And that's pretty exciting stuff... to let go of your troubles,
forget about what you need to do later,
Right here. Right now.

~ Cynthia Glinka

OH BOY, OH BOY, OH BOY!!!
IT'S TOMORROW NITE -- STOMPY JONES & JEAN VELOZ

Okay, ask me if I'm excited. Go ahead. You don't even need to ask, I'm just on pins and needles looking forward to our big dance tomorrow night with Stompy Jones AND the legendary "swing goddess" Jean Veloz.

Aside for it just being a fantastic night... I'm also excited for another reason. In 2000, I actually booked Stompy Jones, then known as Swing Session, for their very first Los Angeles gig. But, I couldn't be there. Boo hoo. The reason, I had just broken my neck and was not allowed to be in a crowd. So all the rest of you back then got to enjoy the evening, and I had to sit home alone. Boo hoo, again.

You can imagine my delight that I'll finally get to be at my own club with Stompy Jones playing. At last! Talk about your patience.

POPS SENDS HIS REGARDS

Back in 2000, the lead singer was Pops Walsh. He had to leave the band some time ago because of on-going health problems. But he phoned me yesterday saying he sure wished he could be there with us all tomorrow night and to send his love to all. I do so now.

JEAN VELOZ AND HER SILVER PEN
ON YOUR MARK, GET READY, AUTOGRAPH!

Our very own living legend, 85-year old Jean Veloz is our super special guest tomorrow night. She'll be on hand autographing her new DVD "Legends of Swing." Make sure to get a copy (available at the club for $30) and have her personally sign it for you. I promise it will be one of your greatest treasures.

AND IF YOU NEEDED ANY MORE ENCOURAGEMENT ABOUT TOMORROW NIGHT....

My good dance friend, Darrell Hope, wrote the following in his weekly dance update:

"STOMPY JONES at RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB. Listen, anything I could write about this band is going to pale in comparison to seeing them by people who have seen them because they know how much I'm leaving out. And for those who don't, anything I write about this band will pale in comparison to seeing them because you don't know what you're missing. So about all I can say is get over to Playa del Rey for STOMPY JONES at RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB."

Ain't it the truth.

Whoopee!

JEAN VELOZ DVD AVAILABLE!
MAKE SURE TO RESERVE YOUR COPY FOR JEAN TO PERSONALLY SIGN ON JULY 15

I couldn't be more proud to present these legendary swing dancers from the 1940s. Jean Veloz and her little brother Ray Phelps are two of the most highly praised dancers from the Golden Era of Swing. This DVD was a true labor of love for me. I wanted to present, not only their moves, but their life story through their own voices, pictures, and clips. It's all there, on this two-DVD set.

HERE'S A PREVIEW OF THE DVD

SIGN THE CARD FOR RUDY

Many of you have noted the absence of one of our Rhythm Club regulars - Rudy Flores. I found out recently that he is home bound for the time being with health problems. We miss him so much, his quiet, yet delightful presence. Jessica brought a big get well card for all of us to sign last week at the Rhythm club. Many of you already signed the card... but if you missed it, we'll have it out this week, too, before giving it to him.

Many pass through the club door each week, but Rudy is definitely one of those special spirits. Each week he would sidle up to me and whisper:

"I'm here for my pleasure treatment and my anti-aging therapy."

We wish him the very, very best. If you can't make it to sign the card this week or next, please feel free to email me a message and I will print it out for him.

4TH OF JULY PICTURES UP

A bunch of us had a gool ol' American time marching, or shall I say dancing, or even better, "running-dancing" in the Westchester 4th of July Parade.

I was asked by our Elks to bring a couple of dancers. I thought, why not bring a couple handfuls?

We were supposed to dance behind a float that would be playing swing music. But the music system didn't work, so I ended up driving my little red Miata in the parade with our dancers all around me. It was hysterical. I had to drive with my doors open, so they could hear the music come out of my stereo speakers, and they had to run like the dickens to keep up with the parade flow.

It was just a few blocks, and it was a blast!

Thanks to all who turned up and made the "15 minutes": Eric Chen, Gail Melikian, Hilja Jacknowitz, Jacob Finn, Julia Cardenas, Laura Andrews, Lauren Smith, Lisa Fink, Pat Leavy, Sharon Rennert, Ted Stanley, Tony Mercuro, and my little red car.

Next year, we're planning on having everybody and anybody who wants to join us. Let's have 50-100, what say?!

See you on the dance floor!

AERIALS WORKSHOP

Don't miss out on this super fun workshop!

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

We'll be warming up with some simple lifts to build on timing (the foundation of all aerials), such as the "A Lift." Our big aerial this go 'round will be the "Helicopter."

The "A Lift" (pictured right) is done from Shadow Charleston. If you don't know that yet, make sure to stop by our Thursday evening 8:00pm class at Lindy By The Sea on July 16th, where we'll be teaching it. (Alternatively, find one of your swing buddies to show you.)

The Helicopter (pictured left) is a wonderful flashy aerial, easy to learn. The girl goes around the guy's back, starting and landing in front of him. (It's easy to learn, but to make it look like the picture, give yourself a lot of time to practice) For those ladies who do not like going upside down... there is no flip involved in this one!

They are all moves that a total novice could learn. So if this is your first time taking any aerials class, don't worry, it'll be easy and loads of fun. AND, there is no pressure. Just learn and do what you are comfortable doing.

For all the information and registration, click HERE.

LOOKING FOR A PARTNER FOR THE WORKSHOP?

Ask your fellow students, dancing friends, or email us and we'll see what we can do to find you one. Currently there is a guy looking for a partner.

PLEASE SHOW UP TO THE WORKSHOP 15 MINUTES EARLY (11:45am)
SO WE CAN ALL START ON TIME

We're really looking forward to this workshop!!!

See you there!

Take a look below for all the details.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
