PROHIBITION ENDS AT RUSTY'S TONITE!

ECONOMIC STIMULUS DANCING
DON'T POOP OUT ON SWING

So, don't forget, when you are starting to poop out on a night of dancing at Rusty's Rhythm Club, give yourself a little kick in the pants to get out the door and keep what you love alive!

Not only will you give Lindy Hop an economic Stimulus, you'll give yourself a huge physical and emotional stimulus, too.

JULY FEATURED CLASSES!

8:00 Featured Class - Ongoing Balboa
9:00 Featured Class - Lindy Strolls

Last night in class, the students came up with a great idea for our second Featured Class - The Lindy Strolls. Of course, your wish is our command.

The Lindy Strolls are used widely around the world, and every Lindy Hopper worth their shoes should be able to jump into the fray when the dancers get going.

We'll be teaching:

The Shim Sham

The Shim Sham originated by Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant as a tap dance in the late 1920's and adopted by Lindy Hoppers in the 1930's. The dance was greatly simplified by dropping all the taps (ask me to show you the tap version some time). Of all the Lindy Strolls, it is the most well-known and widely used, kept alive in great part to the recently departed Lindy great, Frankie Manning. It can be danced to any 32 bar structured swing song. See sample HERE on Youtube.

The Jitterbug Stroll

The Jitterbug Stroll is a swing line dance choreographed in 1992 by Ryan Francois, a Lindy Hop dancer and teacher from London. It is danced to swing music with 12 bar blues structure such as Woody Herman's "Woodchopper's Ball" or Steven Mitchell's "The Jitterbug Stroll", a modern song created for this choreography. See Marcus and Baerble lead a group in the Jitterbug Stroll HERE on Youtube.

Rusty's Rhythm Club Stomp

The Rhythm Club Stomp was introduced by Rusty Frank & Peter Flahiff in 2000. It is a one-chorus routine derived from the opening chorus number in the movie "Lady of Burlesque," featuring Barbara Stanwyck. Like the Shim Sham, it is a stroll and no partner is needed. Makes a great performance number and is fun to do at a dance (very easy to learn on the spot!) It can be danced to any 32 bar structured swing song. HERE'S the movie version! And HERE'S Rusty demonstrating it.

JEAN VELOZ DVD AVAILABLE!
STAY TUNED FOR DVD RELEASE PARTY WITH JEAN & STOMPY JONES, JULY 15

Save the date -- Wednesday, July 15th. That's when we're gonna have our DVD Release Party with Jean Veloz IN PERSON! The band? Stompy Jones ~ making their Rusty's Rhythm Club debut. More soon.

You can get the DVD my website here:

or at class and the club. Be ready for Jean Veloz to personally sign your copy!

I couldn't be more proud to present these legendary swing dancers from the 1940s. Jean Veloz and her little brother Ray Phelps are two of the most highly praised dancers from the Golden Era of Swing. This DVD was a true labor of love for me. I wanted to present, not only their moves, but their life story through their own voices, pictures, and clips. It's all there, on this two-DVD set.

AERIALS WORKSHOP
SUNDAY, JUNE 28TH, 1-3PM

Once or twice a year, Ron and I answer one of your top five requests and have an Aerials Workshop. Aerials are those flashing moves where someone goes in the air (usually, but not always, the girl). Originally called "Air Steps," aerials have always played a part in Lindy Hop during performances, competitions, and jam sessions.

This workshop will focus on aerials that anyone from a beginner to advanced dancer can do.

Take a look below for all the details.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
