GREAT TO BE HOME AND BACK WITH YOU

If you have to come back from Europe, if you have to stop eating all the great European food, if you have to stop hanging out in the Alps, if you have to stop taking trains from Switzerland to France, if you have to come home...

Then it's great to come home to YOU ALL!!!

It was such fun being back at Lindy By The Sea with all our Tuesday night regulars and on Thursday with all the newbies ~ there is just a certain special fun spirit. I think it gives us all a big sense of relief from our daily travails.

And what fun with the Jive Aces last Wednesday. Those guys are just maniacs on stage and off. I mean that in the best way. This time 'round, guest drummer Mark, lead us completely around the joint drumming on anything and everything in his path including chairs, the dance floor, the bar, glasses on the bar, and even Alex's (trombonist) forehead. For any dancer who was there for the first time, I'm sure you'll never forget it!

May I also add what a thrill it was to have Keely Smith in the house with her (and Louis Prima's) daughter, Tony Prima.

Here's to more fun throughout the rest of the year.

JEAN VELOZ DVD AVAILABLE!

I couldn't be more proud to present these legendary swing dancers from the 1940s. Jean Veloz and her little brother Ray Phelps are two of the most highly praised dancers from the Golden Era of Swing. This DVD was a true labor of love for me. I wanted to present, not only their moves, but their life story through their own voices, pictures, and clips. It's all there, on this two-DVD set.

You can get the DVD my website here:
http://rustyfrank.com/shop/ontap.asp
or at class and the club.

Whoopee!

AERIALS WORKSHOP
SUNDAY, JUNE 28TH, 1-3PM

Once or twice a year, Ron and I answer one of your top five requests and have an Aerials Workshop. Aerials are those flashing moves where someone goes in the air (usually, but not always, the girl). Originally called "Air Steps," aerials have always played a part in Lindy Hop during performances, competitions, and jam sessions.

This workshop will focus on aerials that anyone from a beginner to advanced dancer can do.

Take a look below for all the details.

FRANKIE MANNING
1914-2009

I probably met Frankie the first month I started Lindy Hopping back in June 1996. And over the years, I met him again and again here in California and around the world.

He was a bear of a man, who almost broke every bone in my body every time he hugged me (right up to his 94th year!). I used to brace myself when I saw him coming towards me with outstretched arms, a huge smile on his face, and the words "Hey, Rusty!" rolling off his lips. But I could never prepare myself enough for the great hug! It was the embodiment of his entire being ~ energy, life, strength, enthusiasm.

Now those hugs will be embedded forever in my memory, something to conjure up anytime I need a little strength poured into me.

For those of you who never got to meet this historical Lindy Hop figure, you can read all about him at his own website: FRANKIEMANNING.COM

I have also included a wonderful documentary as our clip of the week, "Never Stop Dancing." I'm sure you'll enjoy it and be inspired.

One more note... dancers all around the world filmed their communities doing The Shim Sham in a project called "Global Shim Sham." It was meant as a surprise for Frankie's 95th birthday (which, sadly he did not live to see). It has been beautifully edited together, and I have included that in our clip of the week, as well.

Our Rhythm Club entry didn't make it (as I am sure hundreds didn't... but you can see ours below).

See you on the dance floor!

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
