I'M ALIVE
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ME

Yep. It was nine years ago today that I dropped on my head doing an aerial and broke my neck in five places and dinged my cervical cord. How time flies when you're having fun. Six months in a halo brace, six months of students and friends bustling around me do everything. And nine years of gradual recovery from total paralysis to today.

Thanks to all who have helped along the way. What a journey!

How Rusty broke her neck

Rusty's Hospital Adventure

The Aerial that did it (not THE one, don't worry)

The Amazing Story of the Banner (Where's Rusty?)

P.S Many people ask how I am doing today, so here's an update. I have stiff neck compared to most people. Everyone will eventually get that, I'm just ahead of the game. But, seriously, I still have a lot of pain in my head (yes, it's all in my head) from dinging my cervical cord. Still getting treated for that. If you see me rub my head or ears, you'll now know why, means my head is bugging me. Also, my arms were both affected, and they are much weaker because of the nerve damage. I still get stronger and stronger each day... What a process!

See you on the dance floor!

BENNY GOODMAN ORCHESTRA - SING SING SING 1937

THIS WEEK'S CONTEST!!*

The first person to send us an email with the answer to the following wins a free pass to the Rhythm Club for tomorrow nite:*

QUIZ:

The Benny Goodman Orchestra had been playing all over the United States to limited success. Where were they on the night of their big breakthrough? When was it?

Send your answer to us at info@rustyfrank.com.
Only the weekly winner will receive a response to their Contest Answer.

NOTE: Google is your friend! All the answers are only a Google search away. Have fun and learn about our swing history at the same time.

LAST CONTEST

QUIZ:

Frankie Manning had never seen the Big Apple dance when he choreographed his version in Hollywood.

How did he know what to do?

ANSWER:

Even though Frankie Manning had not seen the Big Apple dance before, he was able to choreograph the routine based on the description of the dance in a telegram. The dance was based on combining jazz steps that the Lindy hoppers were already familiar with, such as Truckin', the Suzie-Q, and Boogies,so the group quickly learned the new steps.

WINNER:

Christa Gomez

*Contestants may play as many times as they wish, but may only win the prize once a year. Contestants must use their Rhythm Club pass for the week they won the contest.

Benny Goodman NPR - Read this story and listen to the radio broadcast of how Benny Goodman won over American and the rest of the world with this new fangled thing called "Swing"!

www.rustyfrank.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
