Shaking the blues away, unhappy news away
If you are blue, it's easy to
Shake off your cares and troubles

Telling the blues to go, they may refuse to go
But as a rule, they'll go if you'll
Shake them away

~ Irving Berlin

SHAKE OFF THOSE "TAX DAY BLUES" WITH DANCING!

TROPICAL NITE AT THE RHYTHM CLUB WITH THE FABULOUS ESQUIRES

As anyone who has ever twinkled their toes on the swing dance floor knows, you can't be anything but happy when out for a night of dancing! It just is impossible to think about anything else but the happy music, the smiling faces, and your moving body when out and about at a swing dance class or a dance.

So shake those blues away this Wednesday (TAX DAY!) with us at Rusty's Rhythm Club with The Fabulous Esquires Big Band.

And just to relax a little more, let's transport ourselves to a tropical locale by dressing Hawaiian.

Aloha!

DARRELL DOES IT AGAIN

Our intrepid swing news agent, Darrell Hope, does it again with his witty run down of the week's happenings. Here's what he has to say about our club this Wednesday:

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15, 2009

If you've already finished filing your tax returns, then you might was well come out and celebrate with a tropical themed dance with THE FABULOUS ESQUIRES and they lead you into a recovery dance at RRC. If you've just filed your extension, then THE ESQUIRES will be happy to look the other way and congratulate you for your mastery of procrastination as they swing out tonight at RRC. And if you're still crunching away at the numbers and muttering incessantly "where did it all go?' wrap it up, and get yourself down to RRC for THE FABULOUS ESQUIRES as they play music to commiserate to at RRC. And in case you didn't get the message, the band at Rusty's tonight is THE FABULOUS ESQUIRES. RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB in the Elks Lodge, 8025 W. Manchester, Playa Del Rey, park and enter in the back.) BROKE?

If you don't have any money left after writing that big IRS check, come along anyway and pay what you can! Even if it's nothing. Just dance!

FOR THOSE WHO MISSED IT... A NEW NUMBER WITH RUSTY FRANK & DANIEL GLASS WITH JOHN REYNOLDS

Earlier in the year, Daniel Glass (world-renown drummer of Royal Crown Revue and Rhythm Club All-Stars) talked to me about doing a drum-tap number a la Eleanor Powell and Buddy Rich. Anyone who likes to even put my name in the same sentence as my tap dance idol gets my attention.

So we got together and worked up some ideas which we performed along with guitarist extraordinaire John Reynolds at the Cicada Club last Sunday.

You can watch the number here, and the entire evening's entertainment here on Maxwell DeMille's broadcast archive.

See you on the dance floor!

TRAIN STATION HAPPINESS

Pandora is a do-it-yourself radio stations. I don't know what I would do without it. Keeps me happy all day long while I work away in my little office. What I like about it especially is that it lets you find out about the songs you like. I am happily typing away to Benny Goodman music thanks to Pandora!

If you are listening to a song, you can click on the icon, and it brings you to a second page that looks like this (which can link you to sites to purchase the music):

You can also listen to other tracks there, and it makes related suggestions. For any swing music lover, this a treasure trove of music goodies!

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
