RUSTY'S ELEVEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY
CELEBRATING NEXT WEEK AT RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB

I honestly can't believe it's been ELEVEN years since I started this swing dance business. Goodness gracious! It's time to party! I've got the best swing orchestra in Los Angeles (the world?) for us. Hope to see you all there.

P.S. Don't forget to wear some green for St. Paddy's.

HISTORY

It was back in May of 1998 that I was asked to teach a weekly Wednesday swing dance class at Point 705 in Hermosa Beach. It was one of those fateful stories... right time right place... just deciding to go out the front door making all the difference.

I had come back to America, after a two-year stint dancing in Europe, and was out dancing one January in 1998 at the world famous Derby. At this time, swing dancing was riding the crest of the resurgence wave of popularity, and the Derby was packed nightly. Magician Brian Gillis was there with a group of friends. We had some super fun dances, and he took my card with the idea of taking private dance lessons with his girlfriend. Jump forward some months. I get a call from Brian, "My friends are opening a new restaurant and want to have a swing night. I told them about you... ya wanna teach a class there on Wednesdays?" Well, the rest, as they say, is now swing dance history. I had since teamed up with Peter Flahiff, and he and I hosted the weekly dance there until we moved to our current Rhythm Club location in 2001.

During our first months at 705, people repeatedly asked us to start some on-going lessons. Our first location was Episcopal by the Sea (thereby getting our name, Lindy By The Sea). We later moved to The Neptunian Women's Club, and then to our current location at Rebekah Lodge.

Peter moved on at the end of 2002, and Ron Campbell and Giovanni Quintero joined the teaching team at the start of 2003. How many people have passed through the doors of Lindy By The Sea and the Rhythm Club? Literally thousands. And they keep on comin' through these doors.

SHIM SHAM FOR FRANKIE MANNING
QUICK LESSON AT THE CLUB THIS WEEK DURING BAND BREAK

Our "Father of Lindy Hop," Frankie Manning, is turning 95 this year. A huge event is scheduled in New York this May. One of the projects is to present Frankie with a massive "Shim Sham" clip of people all over the world doing the dance he loves so much.

We are planning on filming it at our Anniversary Party on March 18th. Many people mentioned that they would like a brush up course and others that they would like to learn it. So I will be doing a crash course THIS Wednesday (that's tomorrow night) at the club. It's an easy dance with just a few steps. Come along and learn it. You'll have a week to practice it.

I'll also be teaching it at the Dance-A-Thon this Saturday night at 11:00pm! (our Link of the Week)

I've got Frankie as our Clip of the Week leading a big group in the Shim Sham, so you can get a preview.

By the way, I'll never forget the first time I saw him lead a group in the dance. I had known the tap version for years. Tappers often finish a show with all the performers gathering to do it as a finale. But this was insane. There were over 400 people in the room doing the Shim Sham with Frankie! It blew my mind.

So let's blow Frankie's mind with this Shim Sham extravaganza!!!

BIRTHDAY PHOTOS TAKEN BY PRO-PHOTOGRAPHER JEAN TSAI
THEY ARE GORGEOUS!!!!

One of our Lindy By The Sea students, Jean Tsai, is also a professional photographer. She came to the club on my birthday and shot some of the best photos I've ever seen there. She has loaded them on Flicker.

Jean really captured the joy we feel when on the dance floor.

Jean said she'll be back at my Anniversary Party next week! Fantastic. Thanks, Jean!

Here are some of my favorites! (Many were taken during the Jill & Jack Contest.

LIVE BROADCAST
FROM RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB
LAST WEEK

Last week, we had our first ever live broadcast from the Rhythm Club. I thought you might be interested in the numbers. Phat Cat Swinger's performance was broadcast live on Wednesday and then again on Friday. Total Live Views: 10,836 (about 3800 on Wednesday and about 6900 on Friday)

If you ask me, those are pretty exciting numbers!

You can still take a look at the night HERE.

By the way, they are planning on broadcasting again at our Anniversary Party next week.

See you on the dance floor!

SHIM SHAM WITH FRANKIE MANNING

I'll be teaching this dance tomorrow night during the band break for those who want to learn it, have a refresher course, and be ready to dance it at the club next week to film for Frankie's Birthday video.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
