IT'S TOMORROW NITE!
RUSTY'S "YIPEE-AY-OH" BIRTHDAY AT THE RHYTHM CLUB!!!
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2009
DRESS UP -- VINTAGE WESTERN

Please joing me in making this one of my best birthdays yet! Come along dressed in the best vintage style western you can; but don't stress about it -- I'm fine with a bandana tied around the neck. Just make sure you come to the dance! I can't eat all that birthday cake by myself.

WILL 'BUCKAROO' RYAN
TO SING "RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB"

Wow! I can't believe it. But we've got Will 'Buckaroo' Ryan direct from "The Cactus County Cowboys" to sing the very tune he wrote just for us - "Rusty's Rhythm Club." What a birthday present. This will be the first time the song has been sung live at the club.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT OUR
JILL AND JACK CONTEST

Yes, we always like to kick it around a bit on my b-day, so we have this Jill and Jack Contest at the dance.

Last year's contest was just great, and I have high hopes for this year's!

What's a Jill & Jack you ask? It's a contest where the girls lead and the boys follow.

Wonderful prizes!

And it's all just for fun, so don't be shy about entering.

PLUS ...

SPECIAL GUEST -- ERIK ROBISON

Erik Robison, who will be doing our workshop on Saturday, February 28th, will be making a special guest appearance.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this great dancer, and one heck of a nice guy, you'll get a chance to meet him at my birthday party. I'm sure we'll be able to coax him to do a little display with me.

ERIK ROBISON WORKSHOP
THIS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2009

I'm so excited about this Saturday's workshop. This is the first time that Erik has done a workshop here in our territory - the South Bay. AND it's his first workshop in two years.

We're sooooo lucky! Erik Robison (of Erik & Sylvia - one of the greatest Lindy Hop teams ever) has studied with scores of the legendary originals of Lindy Hop and is a fabulous teacher himself. We have been teaching the USC Swing classes together for the past month, and I have been bowled over by his expertise, clarity, and fun.

See you on the dance floor!

WEE LITTLE RUSTY

Here's the infamous clip of my childhood recital! Really to prove that no one is a natural born dancer, I love to post this on my birth week. Have a good laugh.

I love what my friend, professional dancer Mark Marchillo, wrote on the Youtube page:

Dreadful! lol You're even like 2 counts behind everyone else Rusty! haha OMG you should see my old vids. There ARE people born to be dancers, but I'm not one of them. But the ones who were good, they didn't want it enough, so here we are. You have to want it the most!

THIS WEEK'S CONTEST!!*

The first person to send us an email with the answer to the following wins a free pass to the Rhythm Club for tomorrow nite:*

QUIZ:

What is Rusty Frank's real name? Extra credit for the middle name.

Hint: All three names have five letters.

Send your answer to us at info@rustyfrank.com.
Only the weekly winner will receive a response to their Contest Answer.

NOTE: Google is your friend! All the answers are only a Google search away. Have fun and learn about our swing history at the same time.

LAST CONTEST

QUIZ:

What is Duke Ellington's real name?

ANSWER:

Edward Kennedy Ellington

WINNER:

Ksenya Medvedev

*Contestants may play as many times as they wish, but may only win the prize once a year. Contestants must use their Rhythm Club pass for the week they won the contest.

FEBRUARY DANCE CLASSES
OH, BOY! COLLEGIATE SHAG AT LAST!

WHAT IS COLLEGIATE SHAG?

Chances are that by now, even if you don't already dance Shag, you've at least seen it on the dance floor already. Collegiate Shag is known as a fast dance of fun, fancy footwork. It's a great dance to have in your repertoire for spicing up fast songs with extra-crazy moves. Even the most basic Shag steps are a lot of fun to do and watch, and many people find it easier to dance Shag to fast music than Lindy Hop.

Okay, this isn't swing related, but it is related to our swing dance THIS Wednesday! Since our theme is vintage Western, I thought this might help everyone brush up on their CowboySpeak. For now, "Get a wiggle on!"

www.rustyfrank.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.

"How do I join?"...
