HOLIDAY PARTY THIS WEEK AT RHYTHM CLUB
DECEMBER 17

As part of our Rhythm Club tradition, our annual Holiday Party is "formal". That's right, you can dress up as much as you want... gowns, tails, tuxedos, or just nice and dressy. In this casual Los Angeles culture, it's nice to have an excuse to really dress up.

We've got the Fabulous Esquires providing the great Big Band music, and, of course, our annual "Hanukah in Santa Monica" polka! One, two, three, hop....

Here're a few photos from last year:

It will be our last Rhythm Club until we come back on January 14th.

RUSTY'S 2008 THANK YOU LIST

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING OUR SWING DANCE SCENE SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE!

All throughout the year I am so grateful for what we have here in the South Bay -- one of the friendliest swing dance scenes I've ever seen. Of course, it's because of your spirit... how you always welcome newcomers, how you have the social dancing "spirit", how there is always a smile on your face on that dance floor, and how we always have such fun.

THANKS TO MY RHYTHM PALS!
GIOVANNI QUINTERO & RON CAMPBELL

SIX YEARS WITH LINDY BY THE SEA!

Gio & Ron add beyond description to our Lindy By The Sea program.

Gio's boundless enthusiasm makes every Thursday an absolute joy-ride for our new students. His ongoing presence at the Rhythm Club, dancing with all the followers and kidding around with all the leaders, makes him a real pal!

Ron's true partnership in developing our Tuesday nite programs, The Track and The Master Track, have brought a new level of instruction to Lindy By The Sea. His ability to clearly and intelligently break down all sorts of moves, and the specific mechanics of what makes the moves work, is something treasured by all.

Both of these gentlemen of swing have made my life such a pleasure. Something that might become tedious (teaching triple step, triple step, rock step for the umpteenth time) is always such fun with these guys around!

Thank you, Ron & Gio, for your spirit and your friendship.

ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS!

I know I could never run Lindy By The Sea and Rusty's Rhythm Club without the tremendous help of all the volunteers who pitch right in. From you students who help set up and breakdown Rebekah Hall each week to all those at the Rhythm Club who make sure things run smoothly. Some of them you know and some of them are hidden beyond the scenes... but all of you make all of this crazy stuff possible!

Robert "The Professor" Vangor, our amazing Rhythm Club "House DJ" who keeps us all dancing to the best of swing music from his tremendous collection

Swing Shift Rhythm Club, All our volunteers who bring joy and happiness to those in hospitals and senior homes. And a special thanks to Jessica & Capt Fun for organizing all these events!

Peter Livingston, our "Door Stop Captain" who also helps set up the Rhythm Club each week.

Jessica Densmore, for always being there at the Rhythm Club as a regular "Door Stop."

Cathryn Sayre "Captain Fun" and all her "Funsters", for making sure birthdays are always taken care of at the Rhythm Club.

Jon Moody, for always being there to help us break down the Rhythm Club each week.

Ji Han, Mark Barclay, and Monika Ploner, for all their enthusiasm and amazing work on fronting my 10 Year Anniversary Party.

Door Stops, there are so many of you who sit at that Rhythm Club door to greet everyone... sometimes just for a minute, sometimes for much more...

Maxwell DeMille, for adding his special brand of pep as our special guest Master of Ceremonies.

Stanley Sheff, our amazing web host and designer.

Steven Von der Porten for helping us set up at the Rhythm Club.

Hollywood Canteen Volunteers for making this one of the most amazing events ever seen in the Swing Dance revival!

Sara Morris & Tom Pelton for bringing in the great decorations for our annual Halloween Party and also for the Hollywood Canteen party this year.

USC Swing Dance Club, All the officers and enthusiasts for getting college students excited about swing dancing... and getting them out on the dance floor!

All those at Rebekah Hall and the Elks Lodge, you always make us feel welcome and provide us with such a homey and friendly environ in which to dance.

Everyone(!) I have forgotten to name here!

AND, OF COURSE, ALL THE GREAT BANDS!

Just in case you can't remember,
here's a list of all the bands that played at the Rhythm Club in 2008!

Notice we have 10 lovely ladies and only 2 lovely gents.╩ LADIES, don't get discouraged and decide not to come.╩ Find out if one of the gents you know is available and...GENTS... please forward to those leads you know who could be available to lead the ladies.╩ You know the program is not difficult...in fact, a quote from one of our gents at the Downey Event..."This is the easiest Volunteer job I ever had...all I do is show up...and dance..." (Thanks, Myron).╩

REPORT
Earlwood Event was grand...
from Jessica Densmore

..our participants included Debbie Wastling, Mark Barclay, Jamie England, June, Evadne, Darryl, Kirk Tuey, Rita Catanzarite, Katie Albee, Tony Mercuro, Julia Voce (dressed so beautifully '40s we had to give her her own dance), Steve Densmore who took photos, and Jes.╩ Photos to be posted shortly.

We tried a "trivia" script to accompany our Holiday music selections╩and we learned such earth-shattering facts as "Louis Prima began learning to play the trumpet because his older brother, Leon, happened to be taking lessons"...and "what was Glenn Miller's middle name?...It was...Glenn, his first name was 'Alton"".╩ Well, the trivia may not really have been so earth-shattering, but the applause the dancers and the music selections got from residents who have lived through the original Swing Era was very enthusiastic. It is amazing how much Holiday Swing music is available out there - and by all the usual suspects...Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald...

One of our╩familiar residents even requested a Louis Armstrong selection - he said no Swing program was complete without Louis being represented.╩John was also a participant - he╩was a swing dancer in his younger days and╩led our ladies from his wheelchair.╩╩Marie, also a resident and Jamie's mother, led enthusiastic cheers and applause, but surely not just because╩Jamie was performing?╩ Tony was able to convince resident, Susie, that she could dance in her wheelchair - her smile╩during and after the dance only continues╩to prove that Tony can charm birds out of trees, and can make any girl, wheelchair-bound or otherwise, feel╩special.╩

Thanks again to all ╩who took time to paticipate - who came from near AND far - braved busy╩traffic╩AND busy personal schedules - to bring some Holiday cheer to the residents at this facility.

Jes

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
