I'M HOME!

When you read this, I should just about be landing at LAX back home from my two weeks in Europe. I'll see all you Tuesday nighters tonight, and then tomorrow, I'll see you at the Rhythm Club! I'll have loads of stories and pictures to share.

Thanks to all those who kept it all alive while I was away:

Lindy By The Sea:

Thanks to my wonderful co-teachers Gio & Ron and Emily for helping Gio on Thursday behind the counter.

Rusty's Rhythm Club:

Thanks to our super DJ Robert "The Professor" Vangor
and the "Rhythm Club Gang" of volunteers:
Jessica, Cathryn, Jon, Steven, and all those who pitch in throughout the night.

SEE YOU SOON!

TRY TO BE FEARLESS

I know that one of the greatest part of swing dancing is "letting yourself go". Sometimes it's the last thing we remember to do -- but it's one of the crucial parts of Lindy Hop. I call it "The Silly Factor." I mean, a dance that has moves called "Peckin'," "The Itch and The Scratch," and "The Shorty George," you gotta just let go! So get on that dance floor this week, and just get silly! I'll be right there with you.

See you on the dance floor!

Jerry Lewis shows us how to Lindy Hop!

JUMPIN' JOZ

The Jumpin’ Joz Band's style is a wonderful combination of swing, jump, jazz, early R&B, reminiscent of Count Basie, Louie Prima, Benny Goodman, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald & Louie Jordan. Their music is great for listening as well as swing dancing. Jumpin’ Joz is the leader, drummer, singer, and arranger whose inspiration is the great Gene Krupa. He plays with an exciting down to earth swing beat. Because Joz is a swing dance performer and teacher, he plays the beat the dancers want to hear.

IT'S THIS WEDNESDAY!

UPCOMING EVENTS
WON'T YOU JOIN US?

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6

John Apodaca and his niece, Sharon Gonzales (who is Activity Coordinator at this facility) have arranged for us to dance at this facility. We have had an enthusiastic audience here and always have members of the "audience" join us in reliving their Swing Dance days.

Here is the scoop:

Downey Retirement Center
11500 Dolan Ave.
Downey, CA 90241
Sharon Gonzales, Activity Coordinator

Saturday, Dec. 6, '08, 2-3 PM

Current participants are being recruited by John and Scott but so far it is rumoured that:

John Apodaca, Scott Giordano, Debbie Wastling, Matt Bartley, Carol Hackett & Jessica Densmore will be there. I know there are more but John and Scott know who they are and we will update the participant list after we accomplish the Whitter Event this saturday.

RSVP and add yourself to the list - I am sure if you have time afterwards, John or Scott will have an idea of a local restaurant for us to meet and enjoy a pre-Holiday celebration.

Unique-Vintage.com: This site came to me all the way from Germany. It's one of those crazy stories, when something's right in your own backyard, it takes someone from half a world away to tell you about it. Prior to leaving on my Europe trip, the Germany tap camp organizer asked if I would bring her some Charleston dresses. She told me about this store... and it turns out it's in Burbank!

You ladies will love this store (and the website), as they have their dresses by era. They have the most wonderful beaded 1920's Charleston dresses,1930's gowns, and glamorous 1940's dresses.

Maybe there's a nice little item there just for you for our Holiday Party!

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.

"How do I join?"...
Right now, fill in your email address
and click the Yahoo log (that's it!):

Join us in making the world a better place through dancing!

Thank you for joining!
