As we express our gratitude,

VETERAN'S DAY -- A TIME FOR THANKS AND REMEMBRANCE

We so often get caught up in the daily routines and challenges of our lives, we forget how lucky we are living where we do and the freedoms we enjoy. Today, please take a moment to remember those who have, over the years, kept us free by giving their lives.

Make certain to thank our WWII vets tomorrow night, Sol (above) & Rudy (below) who regularly come to the Rhythm Club.

See you on the dance floor!

THIS WEEK'S CONTEST!!*

The first person to send us an email with the answer to the following wins a free pass to the Rhythm Club for tomorrow nite:*

QUIZ:

Name the dancers with Jean Veloz in our clip of the week.

Send your answer to us at info@rustyfrank.com.
Only the weekly winner will receive a response to their Contest Answer.

NOTE: Google is your friend! All the answers are only a Google search away. Have fun and learn about our swing history at the same time.

LAST CONTEST

QUIZ:

How many Lindy Hop DVDs does Rusty sell on her shop page?

I know, this is a cheap ploy to get you to go to my online store and look and see all the goodies I've got.

ANSWER:

9

WINNER:

Brenda Toy

*Contestants may play as many times as they wish, but may only win the prize once a year. Contestants must use their Rhythm Club pass for the week they won the contest.

FEATURED CLASSES
"BIG JOHN SPECIAL"

You asked for it, you got it -- another "Routine's Class"! This is a brand new routine for us at Lindy By The Sea -- "Big John Special." Created by Jason Taylor and Patrick Fredrikson especially for the award-winning Hollywood Hornets team, the purpose of "Big John Special" was to become the new "Jeep Jockey Jump." The idea was the same, to have an outside structure, and solos to be created by the groups, themselves. If you've never done a routine (choreographed dance) before, come along -- you'll just LOVE it! The reason being is the order of moves is set, and you get time to really perfect these moves and your dance style. You also get the fun of working with a small group in creating a section of the dance.

THIS CLASS OPEN TO ALL LEVEL 3 AND UP

IN HONOR OF THOSE WHO SERVED
ON THIS VETERANS DAY

I thought you would enjoy seeing faces of those who served so that we may live... these are photos I collected when preparing for our Hollywood Canteen Dance in August.

Yep, that's my pop in the center, the sailor.

FRANKIE MANNING UPDATE*

To Frankie's Friends and Fans:

After four months of what must have felt like house arrest, Frankie finally got out for a terrific dance celebrating Yehoodi's 10th Anniversary. Here the happy man stands up as he is welcomed by the enthusiastic crowd.

No one could be happier than Cynthia Millman and myself, both seated at Frankie's right. Thanks to Toni Duguid for the photo.

Later in the evening, Frankie astonished the dancers, and maybe even, himself, by getting up and doing the Shim Sham, with a little help from his cane and his friend Margaret Batiuchok.

Now that Frankie's heart beat and blood pressure are stabilized, he has finally begun an intensive physical therapy for his hip replacement. Hopefully, with improvement in his leg strength and his balance, he will be able to return to his dancing and teaching schedule soon. He can do it!

Love to you all,
Judy Pritchett

Wikipedia - History of Veterans Day: Wikipedia is a wonderful source of information and links. Here's a brief summary of the history of Veterans Day:

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 12, 1919. The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting the President issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday; "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

In 1953, an Emporia, Kansas, shoe store owner named Al King had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who served in World War I. King had been actively involved with the American War Dads during World War II. He began a campaign to turn Armistice Day into "All" Veterans Day. The Emporia Chamber of Commerce took up the cause after determining that 90% of Emporia merchants as well as the Board of Education supported closing their doors on November 11, 1953, to honor veterans. With the help of then-U.S. Rep. Ed Rees, also from Emporia, a bill for the holiday was pushed through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law on May 26, 1954.[3]

Congress amended this act on November 8, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day since

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
