JEAN VELOZ HAS A SWELL TIME AT RHYTHM CLUB

Our legendary pal, Jean Veloz, was shining brightly last Wednesday at Rusty's Rhythm Club. We spotlighted her in a "One Girl and Two Boys" numbe with our very own Giovanni Quintero and Ron Campbell.

I'm telling you, this gal's got more class and style than is possible!

Take a look at the scrapbook!

(Remember, she's gonna be on our Lindy Cruise!)

SWING VOTERS

I don't mean to be partisan at all, I just thought this was fun -- and another way swing is throughout our society. Will Galison and His Orchestra posted a video using the song "Choo Choo Ch-Boogie" for a Barack promotion.

It is indeed an exciting election!

See you on the dance floor!

The Solomon Douglas Swingtet is making its Los Angeles debut on Sunday, October 12th at the world-famous Derby!

Who is Solomon Douglas? He's a musician, bandleader, arranger, and lindy hop teacher from Seattle. What is the Solomon Douglas Swingtet? It's a 10-piece or eight-piece "little big band" that plays swinging instrumental music from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s: Basie, Ellington, Lunceford, Henderson, Benny Moten, Jelly Roll Morton, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Oliver Nelson.

The Solomon Douglas Swingtet has been playing at Lindy Hop events all over North America since 2002. You can hear some recordings of the band here: http://solomondouglas.com/audio_clips.html

FRANKIE MANNING UPDATE
from Judy Pritchett

Hi Frankie's Fans and Friends,

Thanks for your emails, cards and well wishes.

Frankie is making a slow recovery. His physical therapy for his new hip has been delayed because of problems with his blood pressure. He has cancelled just about all of his Fall workshops and is putting all his energy into resuming his teaching after the new year.

Two weeks ago Frankie had a procedure to normalize his heart rhythm. Since the procedure involves giving the heart a shock, Frankie had to go under a very fast-acting anesthesia. Right before, as the doctor was explaining the purpose of the procedure one last time, Frankie looked up at him and said in a perfect deadpan, "I don't see how my rhythm could be abnormal in any part of my body." Well, it isn't any more. The procedure was successful and Frankie's heart has returned to normal rhythm! Now his treatment is focused on keeping it that way.

Just a few days before that procedure Amy Van Vechten, a young reporter from the online magazine Flyp, came by and interviewed Frankie. Her delightful video interview is online at

http://www.flypmedia.com/issues/13/#12/1

For those of you who recognize her name, yes, Amy is the granddaughter of the chronicler of the Harlem Renaissance and photographer Carl Van Vechten. Amy continues a fine family tradition in journalism.

From her great story you can see that Frankie is as vivacious and charming as always. He is just slowed down a bit, and not very happy about it. He misses you all and loves hearing from you.

Thanks again for your concern and support,

Judy

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
