WHERE'S RUSTY?
"BONJOUR"
GREETINGS FROM FRANCE"

(Isn't it nice that they have doors with my initials on them all over France? Sure makes a girl feel welcome.) Oui, I'm in France now, taking a little rest visiting my cousins, Bud and Christine, in their 3-story stone cottage in Normandy, France. They are one of the most interesting couples I know, as they both were in the diplomatic corps at a most interesting time in history. They met in the former Soviet Union in the 1960's, he a Minnesota boy, and she a French girl (her first impression of him was a slovenly American who chewed gum and always had his hands in his pockets -- I say!). Here, I'll recover, for the final round of my trip.

HOI, FROM HOLLAND
TAP DAY IN ZWOLLE

I have taught in many interesting venues in my life as a dance teacher, but one of the most interesting was in the Tap Barn in Zwolle, Holland. Michelle (pictured above with me last year at Traditions in Tap, NYC) and her husband bought a small farm with an old barn on it, and converted the barn into a tap dance studio. That year, I was the first guest teacher there. This year, they've informed me, I'll be the last, as they are moving to France to retire (?).

Here, I'll be teaching all weekend -- tap dance, tap dance, tap dance... all in honor of National Tap Dance Day (International! Tap Day).

Last time I was here, I didn't have a digital camera... so no ready photos to show you... you'll have to see them when I come home. :) Next week!

HAPPY NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY!
MAY 25TH

In 1989, I was in Washington, D.C. doing research on my book, "Tap! The Greatest Tap Dance Stars and Their Stories, 1900-1955," when a phone call came through that "IT" had happened. The National Tap Dance Day Bill had passed. I was interviewing Brenda Bufalino, and when we got the news, we hopped in a cab and went directly over to the office of the sponsoring congressman - John Conyers, Jr.

Make sure you celebrate by tapping your toes and spending a little time on YouTube watching your favorite tap dancer!

Here's the Bill:

The passage of US Joint Resolution declaring May 25th National Tap Dance Day, was the result of hard work by Nicola Daval, Carol Vaughn and Linda Christensen of the Tap America Project. It was introduced and shepherded through the process by Congressman John Conyers and Senator Alfonse D'Amato and signed into law by President George Bush on November 7, 1989. {The next project for TAP is a commemorative stamp.}

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 131 Introduced by John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI)
SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 53
Introduced by Alfonse D'Amato (R-NY)

TO DESIGNATE MAY 25 AS NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY

Whereas
the multifaceted art form of tap dancing is a manifestation of the cultural heritage of our Nation, reflecting the fusion of African and European cultures into an exemplification of the American spirit, that should be, through documentation, and archival and performance support, transmitted to succeeding generations;

Whereas
tap dancing has had an historic and continuing influence on other genres of American art, including music, vaudeville, Broadway musical theater, and film, as well as other dance forms;

Whereas
tap dancing is a joyful and powerful aesthetic force providing a source of enjoyment and an outlet for creativity and self-expression for Americans on both the professional and amateur level;

Whereas
it is in the best interest of the people of our Nation to preserve, promote, and celebrate this uniquely American art form;

Whereas
Bill "Bojangles" Robinson made an outstanding contribution to the art of tap dancing on both stage and film through the unification of diverse stylistic and racial elements; and

Whereas
May 25, as the anniversary of the birth of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is an appropriate day on which to refocus the attention of the Nation on American tap dancing: Now therefore, be it

Resolved
by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that May 25, 1989 is designated "National Tap Dance Day." The President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such a day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

RUSTY'S RETURN! WELCOME ME HOME!!

NEW BAND AT THE RHYTHM CLUB - May 28th
LADD MCINTOSH BIG BAND

Rarely does a band come more highly recommended! A cadre of our gang saw this band recently, and went so wild over them they wouldn't leave me alone until I booked them. It took some finagling, but we (me and the band) managed to come up with a date -- and it's next week, just in time for my return to the gold ol' U.S. of A.

Won't you welcome me and the band?!

See you then!

See you on the dance floor!

Swing Shift
www.rustyfrank.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
