WE'VE GOT THE LEGENDARY JEAN VELOZ "LIVE, IN PERSON!"
Two years ago, we were lucky enough to get Jean Veloz to teach a styling workshop with us! We mustered up our courage and asked her again, and, you guessed it, we got her! So make sure to mark your calendars for April 27th. You definitely don't want to miss your chance to spend time with this dance legend, and delightful octogenarian.
This workshop features Jean's styling and moves, AND Dean Collins. Take a little looksie on youtube, and you'll see what all the fuss is about!
WON'T YOU JOIN THE SSRC?
FOR THE GOOD SHEPERD SHELTER
I would really like to encourage you to take a look at our featured Swing Shift Rhythm Club activity -- a fundraiser for The Good Sheperd Shelter. Click HERE for details.
The Swing Shift Rhythm Club is our volunteer organization/club, where we focus on "Fun & Philanthropy" through Swing Dancing. Anyone can be part of the fun -- and do good work at the same time. Please take a moment to peruse, and perhaps join these worthwhile activities.
Thank you to our SSRC organizers Jessica and Capt Fun and all the volunteers.
See you on the dance floor!
Get a head start on tonight's Featured Class with this little 1920's instructional movie. It will also give you something to do on those long taxi drives (make sure to watch this 2:51 clip all the way through!).
THIS WEEK'S CONTEST!!*
The first person to send us an email with the answer to the following wins a free pass to the Rhythm Club for tomorrow nite:*
How did the dance "The Charleston" get it's name?
Send your answer to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Only the weekly winner will receive a response to their Contest Answer.
NOTE: Google is your friend! All the answers are only a Google search away. Have fun and learn about our swing history at the same time.
How did the dance "Balboa" get it's name?
The "Balboa" got its name from the coastal Balboa Peninsula at Newport Beach, California. People from the Los Angeles area who'd seen it started referring to it as 'The Balboa', or the dance being done in Balboa.
*Contestants may play as many times as they wish, but may only win the prize once a year. Contestants must use their Rhythm Club pass for the week they won the contest.

RUBY'S DINER -- GOOD SHEPERD SHELTER FUNDRAISER
APRIL 12TH 5-9PM
"FUN & PHILANTHROPY!"
We are doing a fundraiser at Ruby's in Redondo Beach on Sat Apr 12 from 5pm - 9pm for the Good Shepherd Shelter. We will not have a repeat of the last time as this is truly our thing.
I need some dancers to dance outside for however long you want to. I will have the music set up and the space. Please let me know if you can come out. Even if for just 15 min it will add to the night.
Please print the flyer and bring it with you or email it along. Everyone needs to have the flyer to present to the waiter/waitress and then 20% of the bill will go to the Shelter. We can not pass the flyer out when there but I will have a few laying around just in case someone forgets theirs.
You can come and dance a bit, eat a bit and then go to other venues the same night. I will be there all night.
Please let me know if you can dance and what time. It will be fun night and hopefully we can raise lots of money for the Shelter. They have been so surprised with what we have done so far, so lets mark our calendars and raise lots of money.
I will also have flyers at different venues if you want to pick them up there. Pass them out to all your friends and family.
Thanks for always being there and helping to make our fundraisers so much fun as well as benefiting those in need.
VINTAGEPERIODS.COM/CHARLESTON Read all about the dance that was simply put one of the biggest dance crazes this country has ever known - The Charleston. Make sure to come along to our Featured Class (starting tonight) which features two weeks of this great dance, then two weeks of dips and tricks.
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?
Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."
THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:
1. Having fun! (Fun)
2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)
1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).
2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
