"BOMBAY BY THE SEA"!
THE INTERNATIONALITY OF SWING

There are so many things I love about swing dancing, and one of them is the internationality of it. What I mean by this is how the dance has such a universal appeal that it draws people from all backgrounds and cultures. And it's not just now, but historically.

For the past 10 years I have been teaching at USC for the Swing Dance Club. Over these years, we have always had a strong contingent of students from India. This year, maybe more so than ever. So we have started kidding with our students that they have to start a school back home as an offshoot of Lindy By The Sea called "Bombay By The Sea".

To top it all off, this fabulous clip came across my desk (our Clip of the Week) that is from the 1950s and from India. I want to thank our student, Kimmy Morrissey, from the Bombay By The Sea contingent, for helping me find the clip on an alternate YouTube type site. And thanks to her parents for translating the song for us!

Look around Youtube, and you'll find swing dancing all over!

"JILL AND JACK SHOWDOWN"
BANG! BANG!

THE WINNERS ARE JI HAN (LEADER) AND JAMIE ENGLAND (FOLLOWER)

What a contest! We had 12 contestants, and boy howdie, were they terrific. Our judges (Monika, Michael, Cheryl, Robert, and yours truly) and the crowd (you) certainly enjoyed this display of female leading talent, and creative boy following!

When it came to picking the winners, the judges were unanimous:

Ji Han & Jamie England.

Well done, kids.

We'll have to make this a tradition!

Our enthusiastic student and local dancer, the wonderful Ji Han, has spent countless hours putting together this clip of 10 years of dancing for Rusty's Anniversary Party. Ji - you're amazing, thanks so much!

"BOMBAY BY THE SEA"! -- Eena meena deeka

THE WORDS

(Thanks Kimmy, and your folks, too, for the translation!)

Iinaa miinaa Diikaa, Daai, Daamonikaa
maakaa naakaa naakaa, chIkaa pIkaa rIkaa
Inaa mInaa DIkaa DIkaa De Daai Daamonikaa
maakaanaakaa maakaanaakaa chIkaa pIkaa rolaa rIkaa
ram pam posh ram pam posh
(Just nonsense words to rhyme with the music....like doo wop doo wop or boogie woogie)

dil bechuu.N, hai koI lene vaalaa, aise vaise to nahii.n dene vaalaa
sUratiyaa.N hasii.n ho, umariyaa.N javaa.N ho
koI bhii use dekhe to bas ye gumaa.N ho
yahI hai yahI hai yahii to hai vo
iinaa miinaa Diikaa...

Is there anyone to take my restless heart? The giver is not just anyone but she is young and beautiful and whoever sees her will lose his mind. That is the one, thatÕs the one, thatÕs the one.

mat socho ki sastaa hai saudaa phal paaye lagaaegaa jo paudhaa
dil ki ye kyaarii banegii phulavaarii
ye duniyaa jalegii, jalan kI hai maarii
ha.Nsegii ha.Nsegii ha.Nsegii merii pyaarii
iinaa miinaa Diikaa...

Do not think this is an easy deal; you have to work hard to find it. When you find it, this budding heart will bloom like a flower. Everybody will be jealous when I find my sweetheart, who will be smiling, smiling, smiling.

ye sharte.n to ba.Dii hai.n zaruurii jo koii karegaa inhe.n puurii
mai.n Kushii Kushii use ye dil de duu.ngaa
qasam khaa rahaa huu.N, ki daam bhii na luu.ngaa
magar ye kahuu.NgA, magar ye kahuu.NgA
yahii hai yahii hai yahii to hai vo
iinaa miinaa Diikaa...

I will give my heart gladly to that woman who fulfills all of my desires and dreams. I swear that I will not be afraid to say that. She is the one, she is the one, she is the one.

24 HOUR DANCE-A-THON

Hey everyone!

I'm Danielle Cole. Joseph Rocamora and I are putting together a Rhythm Club/Lindy By the Sea team for a 24 hour Cancer Dance-a-thon March 8th and 9th. All of the money raised goes to City of Hope Hospital to help fight Cancer.

Our team is called "Rusty's Rhythm Club Gates."

You can read all about the event HERE.

We need one person on the dance floor participating at all times. The activities on the dance floor will range from DJ'd music, dance lessons, live music, and contests. You don't have to stay for the whole time but of course it's great if you can. It's $50 to participate but the idea is that you ask friends and family to sponsor you.

For our "uniform" we're planning on wearing our Rhythm Club/Lindy by the Sea bowling shirts so if you don't have one already, contact Ji Han to place your order. (see below)

Thanks to everyone for helping out, it should be a lot of fun, and if you have any question or would like to join, email me at danielleybelle@yahoo.com or Joseph at joseph_rocamora@hotmail.com And for more information or to register to join Rusty's Rhythm Club Gates, go to danceathon.org

Thanks a lot!

Danielle

EVENT -- MARCH 15TH

FROM YOUR PHILANTHROPY COORDINATOR
JESSICA DENSMORE

John Apodaca's niece, Sharon Gonzales, was delighted that we wanted to come back and dance for (and with) her residents. She has also requested a "specialty" Irish dance in place of our usual Ballroom or Latin feature for the "Irish season". The residents are known to join us during our swing dance presentation so it would be no surprise if any of them joined in some Irish dancing too. Let me know if you are available for Swing dance or Irish dance or both.

WON'T YOU JOIN US?

Also, a reminder for those who keep telling me they feel they are not "good enough" - If you know your basics, smile and enjoy being around people who need a little time and attention, you are "good enough". Also, we don't need just dancers, but help with set up, narration (Debbie likes to break from narrating and dance too), being in the audience and applauding, carpooling and recruiting....

BILL ELLIOTT For years, The Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra was a mainstay here in Los Angeles. We were the luckiest Lindy Hoppers to be able to go dancing to his music on a regular basis. But a few years ago, Bill moved to Boston where he is an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music. He has been sorely missed, to say the least! We are so thrilled to be having him for our Decade of Dance Party, March 16th. For those of you who never got to know him, take a moment to browse his website.

Swing Shift
www.rustyfrank.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.

"How do I join?"...
