DRESS UP -- VINTAGE WESTERN
For those of you who have been around for awhile, you know that if it's my birthday, it must be Western! Don't ask me why, but this tradition started at the Rhythm Club years ago and it's carried on with great fun and frolic ever since. Dress up in your finest vintage Western style... and
JILL AND JACK CONTEST -- $100 CASH PRIZE!
We can't resist. With our Western theme next week at Rusty's Rhythm Club, we just had to have a "shoot out" between the cowgirls and the cowboys. So we're having a "Jill & Jack" Contest with a $100 Cash Prize!
What's a Jill & Jack you ask? It's a contest where the girls lead and the boys follow.
We've got loads of our regulars who are quite adept at this. Buckeroos, start practicing!
See you on the dance floor!
THE BILL ELLIOTT DANCE WILL SELL OUT

LETTER FROM CASSIE
BILL ELLIOTT SWING ORCHESTRA VOCALIST
I couldn't have been more delighted when this email showed up in my box. (By the way, the "sister" reference is because over the years people have mistaken us for one another, coming up to me and saying "I just love your singing," and coming up to her saying, "I just love your dancing." One day we compared notes on this and started calling each other "sister"!)
February 16, 2008
I'm so looking forward to the March gig with you and BESO [Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra]! It's truly going to feel like old times!
I took a long look at your website, and just had a big grin on my face because you are just keepin it goin!!!! The swing scene had such a huge resurgence, and then the wave went back out again....and only the loyal remain! So, I am thankful for you sister.
THIS WEEK'S CONTEST!!*
The first person to send us an email with the answer to the following wins a free pass to the Rhythm Club for tomorrow nite:*
Our clip of the week features tap dancer Eleanor Powell and drummer Buddy Rich. The clip starts out with Red Skelton singing the song "Talullah". In this clip you can find one of the main cast members of the classic film "The Wizard of Oz." What is his name and what character did he play in the movie?
Send your answer to us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Only the weekly winner will receive a response to their Contest Answer.
NOTE: Google is your friend! All the answers are only a Google search away. Have fun and learn about our swing history at the same time.
What is Keely Smith's given name?
Dorothy Jacqueline Keely
*Contestants may play as many times as they wish, but may only win the prize once a year. Contestants must use their Rhythm Club pass for the week they won the contest.

24 HOUR DANCE-A-THON
I'm Danielle Cole. Joseph Rocamora and I are putting together a Rhythm Club/Lindy By the
Sea team for a 24 hour Cancer Dance-a-thon March 8th
and 9th. All of the money raised goes to City of Hope
Hospital to help fight Cancer.
Our team is called "Rusty's Rhythm Club Gates."
You can read all about the event HERE.
We need one person on the dance floor participating at
all times. The activities on the dance floor will
range from DJ'd music, dance lessons, live music, and
contests. You don't have to stay for the whole time
but of course it's great if you can. It's $50 to
participate but the idea is that you ask friends and
family to sponsor you.
For our "uniform" we're planning on wearing our Rhythm
Club/Lindy by the Sea bowling shirts so if you don't
have one already, contact Ji Han to place your order. (see below)
Thanks to everyone for helping out, it should be a lot
of fun, and if you have any question or would like to
join, email me at email@example.com or Joseph
at firstname.lastname@example.org And for more
information or to register to join Rusty's Rhythm Club
Gates, go to danceathon.org
Thanks a lot!

PICS UP FROM LAST EVENT AT EARLWOOD
I couldn't be more proud of our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. And that means YOU. All of you who volunteer your time to lift the spirits of others with your smiles, love, and swing dancing -- you are my heros. Here's some pictures that crossed my desk from the last SSRC event.

EVENT ANNOUNCED -- MARCH 15TH
FROM YOUR PHILANTHROPY COORDINATOR
John Apodaca's niece, Sharon Gonzales, was delighted that we wanted to come back
and dance for (and with) her residents. She has also requested a "specialty" Irish
dance in place of our usual Ballroom or Latin feature for the "Irish season". The
residents are known to join us during our swing dance presentation so it would be
no surprise if any of them joined in some Irish dancing too. Let me know if you
are available for Swing dance or Irish dance or both.

WON'T YOU JOIN US?
Also, a reminder for those who keep telling me they feel they are not
"good enough" - If you know your basics, smile and enjoy being around
people who need a little time and attention, you are "good enough". Also,
we don't need just dancers, but help with set up, narration (Debbie likes to break from narrating and dance too), being in the audience and applauding,
carpooling and recruiting....

TROPICALGLEN.COM This is a Jukebox, but no ordinary one. It will play all of your favorite songs from 1952 thru 1982. Most years have over 40 songs. There's a Swing option on the left side. There's even a section at the bottom that allows you to listen to show tunes, TV show themes, Doo Wop, etc. This is pretty neat, and it's free. Read the rest of this and then click on the site at the bottom. Once you click on a song it will play and when it finishes it automatically plays the next song on the list, continuing until it has played all the song. Pick any popular song from 1952 - 1982 or go to the specialty areas, listed in bright colors.
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?
Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."
THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:
1. Having fun! (Fun)
2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)
1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).
2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
