A RIP ROARING TIME WITH THE JIVE ACES
We had such fun with the Jive Aces last week at the Rhythm Club! These guys just have the gift of changing the energy of any room into which they walk.
SURPRISE GUESTS KEELY SMITH AND HER WONDERFUL DAUGHTERS!
A highlight for many was the surprise appearance of legendary swing vocalist, Keely Smith, along with her daughters. The family is a huge fan of The Jive Aces; as Keely Smith said to me, "I'm a Jive Aces groupie." (How cute is that?!)
Keely Smith and Louis Prima's daughter, Toni Elizabeth Prima, got up and sang a few songs with the boys.. and, boy, was she terrific. I also got invited up to join the fellas in "Singin' In The Rain," reprising my introductory taps and background vocals (that's on their CD) (always a highlight of my year!). Special thanks to our very own Maxwell DeMille for adding his super MC-ing skills to the evening.
I have posted a bunch of pictures from the evening in our scrapbooks, click HERE.
Also, I just heard from the boys that they may be back to visit us in June. Cross your fingers.
I thought you might enjoy this declaration of love from the Jives to Fatburgers.
See you on the dance floor!
THE BILL ELLIOTT DANCE WILL SELL OUT
MAKE SURE TO GET YOUR TICKET(S) SOON!
165 tickets out the door. Make sure to get your ticket right way.
This event is sure to sell out, as the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra has not played for the public here in years. All the information on purchasing tickets are on the website... just click HERE or on the image above.
If it's your birthday this week, just let us know at the Rhythm Club so you can get your birthday dance!
24 HOUR DANCE-A-THON
I'm Danielle Cole. Joseph Rocamora and I are putting together a Rhythm Club/Lindy By the
Sea team for a 24 hour Cancer Dance-a-thon March 8th
and 9th. All of the money raised goes to City of Hope
Hospital to help fight Cancer.
We need one person on the dance floor participating at
all times. The activities on the dance floor will
range from DJ'd music, dance lessons, live music, and
contests. You don't have to stay for the whole time
but of course it's great if you can. It's $50 to
participate but the idea is that you ask friends and
family to sponsor you.
For our "uniform" we're planning on wearing our Rhythm
Club/Lindy by the Sea bowling shirts so if you don't
have one already, contact Ji Han to place your order. (see below)
Valerie Geller and her sons, Aaron & Greyson, show what the well-dressed Lindy Hopper will wear.
Our Bowling Shirt Nite was such a hit, that we are already planning the next one. If you wanted to get the "Official Rhythm Club" shirt, we are now taking orders! Click HERE to get yours.

FROM YOUR PHILANTHROPY COORDINATOR JESSICA DENSMORE
Our Earlwood Event is one of our favorites - although the residents are pretty limited
physically, they are sharp and show they enjoy our company by clapping, foot-tapping
and being quite vocal as they "get into it".
Our participants included Debbie Wastling, who also narrated, Matt and Rose,
Evadne and Jes, Emily Callahan, Tom Connolly, Jamie England, Scott Giordano
and Carol Hackett, Cathryn "Cap'n Fun" Sayre. Most of the participants were
from the Torrance area and Debbie dubbed them, "The Torrancians". Many remembered, and were remembered by, such residents as
Marie (Jamie's mom), Tom (former dancer who frequented such swing dance "haunts"
as the Palladium in his day), and Virginia (who came by and wondered what all the fuss
was about and was pleasantly surprised) . Some of the employees and patient families
also came to see the program, and Jamie's brother even took photos (which we hope
to see soon).
Former dancer Tom, who is now in a wheelchair, is still quite adept at leading the ladies
and can transition to double-bug (lead two ladies at the same time) very smoothly.
Resident Virginia and some of the patient families were too shy to come in but peeked
in the doorways for most of the performance. Activity Coordinator Joy was too fast for
us to have her join in the dancing but she left a message (on my cell phone) after we
left that the residents and employees were still talking about the performance hours
after we had gone and are already asking when we can come back.
Events are scheduled for the months of March and April so we hope more participants
will be available. Our March Event has also requested an "Irish" dance so if anyone
knows of anyone who knows of anyone who knows of anyone...let me know!!!

SWINGMUSIC.NET (KEELY SMITH) Wow! This is some website. It's got everything a swing/jazz music aficionado could want: Bios, a shop, history, radio. And, of course, a wonderful bio on our new friend and legendary singer Keely Smith.
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?
Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."
THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:
1. Having fun! (Fun)
2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)
1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).
2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
