CELEBRATING 10 YEARS
LINDY BY THE SEA AND THE RHYTHM CLUB
1998-2008 AND ON!
2008 begins quite a special year for me, as it is my tenth year of running Lindy By The Sea and the Wednesday nite weekly swing dance. Ten years! Can it really be? The years of scrapbooks and newsletters that fill this website only begin to open the floodgates of wonderful happy memories that have been brought to me through this swing dancing life. When I think back over the years, I see one constant image -- that of the smiling faces of the dancers in our swing dance community. Thousands of faces... each smiling as they dance through these years.
It's been a great ride so far!
So now it's time to celebrate.

HOW DID IT ALL START?
It was back in May of 1998 that I was asked to teach a weekly Wednesday swing dance class at Point 705 in Hermosa Beach. It was one of those fateful stories... right time right place... just deciding to go out the front door making all the difference.
I had come back to America, after a two-year stint dancing in Europe, and was out dancing one January in 1998 at the world famous Derby. At this time, swing dancing was riding the crest of the resurgence wave of popularity, and Tthe Derby was packed nightly. Magician Brian Gillis was there with a group of friends. We had some super fun dances, and he took my card with the idea of taking private dance lessons with his girlfriend. Jump forward some months. I get a call from Brian, "My friends are opening a new restaurant and want to have a swing night. I told them about you... ya wanna teach a class there on Wednesdays?" Well, the rest, as they say, is now swing dance history. I had since teamed up with Peter Flahiff, and he and I hosted the weekly dance there until we moved to our current Rhythm Club location in 2001.
During our first months at 705, people repeatedly asked us to start some on-going lessons. Our first location was Episcopal by the Sea (thereby getting our name, Lindy By The Sea). We later moved to The Neptunian Women's Club, and then to our current location at Rebekah Lodge.
Peter moved on at the end of 2002, and Ron Campbell and Giovanni Quintero joined the teaching team at the start of 2003.
How many people have passed through the doors of Lindy By The Sea and the Rhythm Club? Literally thousands. And they keep on comin' through these doors.
See you on the dance floor!

FEATURED CLASS JANUARY 2008
You asked for it, you got it -- another "Routine's Class"! This is a brand new routine for us at Lindy By The Sea -- "Big John Special." Created by Jason Taylor and Patrick Fredrikson especially for the award-winning Hollywood Hornets team, the purpose of "Big John Special" was to become the new "Jeep Jockey Jump." The idea was the same, to have an outside structure, and solos to be created by the groups, themselves.
If you've never done a routine (choreographed dance) before, come along -- you'll just LOVE it! The reason being is the order of moves is set, and you get time to really perfect these moves and your dance style. You also get the fun of working with a small group in creating a section of the dance.
If you are Level 3 and up, you definitely wont want to miss this class!

HOLIDAY PARTY 2007
(LEFT, DANIELLE COLE, OUR BIRTHDAY GIRL THIS WEEK!)
OSCAR PETERSON We lost one of the jazz greats last month. Take a moment and enjoy reading about this artist... and make sure to listen to some of his beautiful music!
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?
Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."
THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:
1. Having fun! (Fun)
2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)
1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).
2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
