SWING KIDS

We were talking about the famous movie "Swing Kids" in class on Sunday, kidding around about the "Lindy Hopping" portrayed in the film. We talked about how many of us got into swing dancing after seeing that movie. It got me to thinking about the picture, and I thought I would include the dance clip in as our Clip of the Week, and the subject as our Link of the Week.

I know that all of us think of ourselves as "Swing Kids." But there was a time in the not too distant past, when being a Swing Kid could land you in a Concentration Camp. The time -- WWII. The place -- Germany and it's confederate nations.

In researching the subject on the web, I was once again deeply moved how powerful our music and dance can be. I hope you have time to read about these brave kids from a time gone by.

A Satirical Song by Swing Kids

"Wir tanzen Swing bei Meier Barmbeck.
Es ist verboten. Wir hotten nach Noten.
Und kommt die Polizei, dann tanzen wir Tango.
Und ist sie wieder weg, dann swingen wir den Tiger Rag."

''We dance swing at Meier Barmbeck.
It is forbidden. We're 'hotting' after notes.
And if the police come, then we dance tango.
And when they're gone, then we swing the 'Tiger Rag' again.''

TAP WORKSHOP THIS SUNDAY
"WILL IT HELP MY SWING DANCING?"

I have had many people ask me the above question, and the answer is a resounding:

"YES! Learning the Shim Sham will definitely help your swing dancing!"

There are so many reasons for this. Among them are, learning some basic tap and Lindy Hop "Boogie Steps" gives you the facility to move your feet, in a word, faster! The dance has wonderful swing rhythmic ideas that fit beautifully into Lindy Hop. The dance contains movement that will definitely enhance your social dancing... movement that you don't learn in most swing dance classes.

Are those enough reasons for you to join our Sunday workshop?

How about the final reason? It's a blast!

I'LL BE TEACHING THE LINDY VERSION OF THE SHIM SHAM, TOO

I know that non-tappers won't pick up every single step in the dance, so I will be simultaneously teaching the Lindy (non-tap, though same structure) version of the Shim Sham.

WHAT IS THE SHIM SHAM?

The Shim Sham originated in 1927 as a tap routine so simple anyone could do it. It was commonly done as a finale in musical revues by all the performers. Tap dancers call it their "National Anthem." Over the years, Lindy Hoppers have adopted the dance, and it is done world-wide. You can read more about it and also purchase my instructional tap DVD HERE

HERE'S A SAMPLE

Remember, it's THIS Sunday!
It's at "The Studio" 113 Main Street, El Segundo 90245

GERMAN SWING YOUTH -- This is a wonderfully thorough German website that really gets into the history of the Swing Kids movement in Nazi Germany during WWII. Another wonderful site for info on his is Wikipedia HERE.

A fascinating time, once again showing the power of music and dance.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
