BIG BAND NITE AND LEVEL ONE AT ...
I don't know about you, but I just love the sound of a big band! And, thanks to you and your support, I've been able to book big bands at the Rhythm Club once a month this year. Tomorrow nite we have the ever-popular Geo Valle Swing City Big Band.
In addition, we'll be welcoming our new Lindy By The Sea Level Ones for their first adventure at the Rhythm Club. Thanks, as always, for getting them out there on that dance floor.
POPS BENEFIT DANCE ANNOUNCED!
I couldn't be more proud of our swing dance community as a result of our recent Pops fundraising dancers all around the globe, Mr. and Mrs. Pops breath a sigh of relief every morning knowing that their bills are paid for now and in the months ahead.
Now, our Los Angeles-Pasadena-Orange County communities are all working (dancing) together by co-sponsoring a Pops Benefit Dance.
This dance is being organized by two Rhythm Club regulars, Teresa London and Debbie Wastling. They have managed to get a 100% donated facility AND Stompy Jones is donating their services (talent) that night. So just about all of your donation will go directly to the Pops!

PETE VINCENT APPEARS IN PICTURE OF THE WEEK
Did I get a big surprise last week when one of Rhythm Club fans showed up last Wednesday and told me that he was IN the Picture of the Week!!! (Pete Vincent used to come out dancing at our club regularly, but then was beset with health problems, and we haven't seen him as often these days.)
Here is a wonderful note that he emailed over to me after the dance:
THE PHOTO YOU RAN LAST WEEK HAD A PICTURE OF ME AT THE TRIANON BALLROOM IN SOUTH GATE CALIFORNIA. THIS HAD TO BE TAKEN AROUND 1938 TO 1940 AS CLOSE AS I CAN REMBER. I THINK IT WAS MORE AROUND 1940.
THERE WAS SWING DANCERS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY SHOWING OFF THEIR DANCE ROUTINES, THE BAND HAD TO BE A BLACK BAND AS THE TRIANON WAS THE ONLY BALLROOM THAT WOULD ALLOW MIXED COLORS TO PARTICIPATE TOGETHER. SWEET'S BALLROOM IN OAKLAND CALIFORNIA WOULD HAVE WHITES DANCE ON SUNDAY AND BLACKS HAD TO WATCH THE BANDS IN THE BALCONY AND IT WOULD REVERSE IT ON MONDAY NITES .
WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY SINCE. THANK GOD FOR THE CHANGE.
OH BY THE WAY I WAS ONLY 16 AT THE TIME.
WITH DANCING MEMORIES.
Pete Vincent, then & now!
See you on the dance floor!
You may remember from my recent visit to Prague, Czech Republic, that I met a long-time "hero" of mine - Ondre Havelka. For over twenty years, Ondre has been keeping 1930's dance music alive.
On a recent search I found this amazing movie that he made. If you didn't know, you sure would be fooled into thinking it was really from the 1930's! Happy viewing.

We've done a great job in our Pops Emergency Fundraising Campaign. It looks like we've raised enough money for 2-3 months. I'll stay in touch with Pops and let everyone know how he and Mrs Pops (Lois) are doing financially and otherwise.
Meanwhile, keep spreading the news about the fundraising by sending people to this active link: POPS
Thank you for all your help, support, and good wishes to Pops and Mrs. Pops.

UNTITLED DANCE SHOW
AUDITION FOR A DANCE SHOW! --
Another dance show is about to be launched (it's the decade of dance... that's for sure!). Look what they've posted:
"Are you a talented amateur dancer who wants to show the nation you can really move? If so, be sure to meet us in a city near you!!!!
Dancing With The Stars judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli will put their reputations on the line as they battle it out across the dance floor to create the ultimate dance group on a new ABC Primetime TV series.
The duo will be scouring the country for the nation's hottest amateur talent and are holding open auditions in a city near you. All genres of dance from b-boy to ballroom and tap to salsa are welcome so come prove your moves and show them you've got what it takes! Bring your family and friends along to cheer you on to success!"
Check out their website for more info!!!
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?
Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."
THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:
1. Having fun! (Fun)
2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)
1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).
2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
