CALLE JOHANSSEN!

COMING TO THE RHYTHM CLUB
THIS WEDNESDAY

When you become a swing dancer, you suddenly have a world of friends. You meet them here, there, and everywhere. You meet them on the dance floor at swing class, swing clubs, dance camps, on vacations... anywhere there's swing dancing -- you meet them. And you have friends for life.

One of the dear friends I met over ten years ago is Calle Johanssen from Sweden. I met him when I first taught at the Swedish swing dance camp -- Herrang in 1996. He's one of the great guys of our swing dance world. Not only does he love to sing Elvis songs, Lindy Hop, tap dance, he also just loves to meet swing dancers everywhere.

So now's your chance. He's coming down to Los Angeles tomorrow and will be coming to the Rhtyhm Club to dance with everyone!

We've got Neil Morrow tomorrow nite, who plays '50s music (Elvis, etc)... and I'm sure if we coax Calle enough, we'll get him up there to sing "Love Me Tender" with the band -- sigh.... swoon...

Come along and help us with some coaxing.

See you on the dance floor!

CALLE JOHANSSON

Our special guest at the Rhythm Club this Wednesday is a good friend from Sweden, Calle Johansson. Here's a little clip from a workshop he did last year in Arizona. I think it'll show all they guys why they'll want to meet him, and all the girls why they'll want to dance with him!

THIS WEEK'S CONTEST!!

The first person to send us an email with the answer to the following wins a free pass to the Rhythm Club for tomorrow nite:*

QUESTION:

Who was Rusty's tap dance mentor?

(Hint: read her bio)

Send your answer to us at info@rustyfrank.com.

NOTE: Google is your friend! All the answers are only a Google search away. Have fun and learn about our swing history at the same time.

LAST CONTEST

QUESTION:

In honor of Jean Veloz being at Camp Hollywood, who was the narrator of "Groovie Movie", in which she appeared in the 1940s?

ANSWER:

Pete Smith

WINNER:

Jenny Haynes

*Contestants may play as many times as they wish, but may only win the prize once a year. Contestants must use their Rhythm Club pass for the week they won the contest.

The original Shim Sham was a tap dance choreographed by Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant in in 1927. Intended for a show finale that could be done by all the performers, it soon became "The National Anthem of Tap" and then of Swing! It was adopted by so many dancers that it has become one the most well-known and wide-spread routines of all time.

There have been many tap and swing variations of the dance over the years, and one of the most exciting and fun was created by Dean Collins. He spiced up the footwork and extended the original routine with additional steps.

You don't need a partner to learn this fantastic routine.

And, you can be any level dancer, from beginning through advanced.

You'll love to add these moves and styling to your Lindy Hop dancing right away!

VOTING RESULTS

Thanks to everyone for voting. There were 80 votes -- altogether:

28 Votes - Dean Collins Shim Sham
23 Votes - Swingout Variations
18 Votes - Lindy Styling
9 Votes - Jeep Jockey Jump routine
2 Votes - Secret Agent Man routine

DANCING WITH CHERRY POPPIN' DADDIES
"You never know where your dancing shoes will take you!"

One of the "funniest" jobs I've ever had was this past Sunday evening. I have a special saying since I first became a professional dancer: "You never know where your dancing shoes will take you!" And, boy oh boy, how true it is. I've danced at The Hollywood Bowl, in an English castle, at Disneyland, all over Europe in the most beautiful vintage theaters you can imagine.... and, now.... ""World of Decor" in Downey!

I was joined by Minn, Katie, and Jimmy to dance in front of the Neo-Swing band -- Cherry Poppin' Daddies -- for a short concert after an auction at World of Decor. My goodness! There we were surrounded by huge antique decor pieces (huge iron gates, carnival pieces, wooden horse bicycles, marble statues...) dancing our little hearts out.

The Cherry Poppin' Daddies played their hearts out, too... and I think were just as surprised as we were to be surrounded by such decor. They were super nice fellows, and a fun (if not bizarre) time was had by all.

Yep, you just never know where your dancing shoes will take you.

EVENT REPORT

This came in from Captain Fun (Cathryn Sayre), who organized the fundraising dancing at Ruby's last month benefiting the Good Shepherd Shelter.

Keep it goin' dancers! You're the best!!!

Dear all,

I just received the most wonderful letter from the Good Shepherd Shelter I want to share with all of you. It makes one's heart so full to know that we dance because we love to but we also benefit those who are in need. I sent the pictures we took that one day, all the cut out cars/tissue and the certificates. I just wish we could have done more - maybe we can play a night to raise money in the form of gift certificates for them in the near future. They are so deserving of our help.

Sorry I don't have a scanner but will bring the letter wed to the Rhythm Club.

Now how can we top this!!!!!!

Have a great day and see you out on the dance floor.

Capt fun - Cathryn Sayre

Dear Cathryn, Jessica and All the GREAT Swing Dancers!!!

Thank you al sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much for all your efforts to help the mothers and children here at Good Shepherd Shelter. The three $25 gift certificates for breakfast, lunch or dinner and the certificate for the party of 10 children will be so much fun to distribute!! We are having a reading contest with the children to determine who goes to that one!!!

It sounds like you had a phenomenal time in the process of earning these fabulous opportunities for the families. Thanks so much for your sharing of your time and talent - and fun - to give our families the chance to make up for lots of lost time in the fun department!

We have been taking the mothers and children to the beach quite a few times this summer as we always have children who have NEVER seen the ocean!! We will use these certificates for some extra special occasions!

I especially loved the cute cut-out cars for displaying the certificates!!

This is such an amazingly kind and sensitive thing for all of you to do!!! We are all in awe of your creativity, generosity, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. May each one of you be as blessed as you have so graciously and generously blessed us!! Know that you will continue to be in our grateful hearts and prayers.

All the best

Sr Anne Kelley - executive director

POPS UPDATE

We've done a great job in our Pops Emergency Fundraising Campaign. It looks like we've raised enough money for 2-3 months. I'll stay in touch with Pops and let everyone know how he and Mrs Pops (Lois) are doing financially and otherwise.

Meanwhile, keep spreading the news about the fundraising by sending people to this active link: POPS

Thank you for all your help, support, and good wishes to Pops and Mrs. Pops.

BAL JAM - LA -- "Bal Jam isn't just a "Balboa exchange." It's a celebration. A weekend full of great swing DJs and live bands where some of the greatest Balboa dancers will meet to dance socially and teach private lessons. A place where dancers from across America and the world will converge.

Because Bal Jam is going back to the birth place of Balboa and Bal Swing--Southern California!

Here's what we got in store for this year:

World-class instructors available for private lessons: Sylvia Sykes, Nick and Denise, David Rehm, Randy and Kara, Marty and Valerie, Marty and Jen, Bobby and Kate, Tise Chao, Peter and Mia, Chris and Holly, and more. ... Yep, that's right: 2 Martys for the price of one. "

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
