"Dancers don't age.
They're suspended in Swing Time!"

SAM AND BARBARA
This is a clip of one of our favorite couples: Sam Militello and Barbara Rice (the couple that the "Sam and Barbara" move is named after). Sam unfortunately passed away the evening of 2/27/2007. Barbara sent this clip saying that one of Sam's dreams was to have a clip of his dancing on the internet. This is an awesome clip of them doing Balboa at the old Memories in April 2000. I hope that you will enjoy it and that it inspires you.
Please see Communique below for some personal recollections.

"Making a difference through swing dancing"
A GREAT ONE PASSES
SAM MILITELLO -- SAM & BARBARA
I am deeply saddened to report that one of our great friends and dancers has passed on after a long illness -- Sam Militello. He danced for years with Barbara Rice, and Sam & Barbara were, without a doubt, two of the friendliest dancers on our Southern California scene. I know that many of you never got a chance to meet them, but know that they were definitely just one of the best.
I first met Sam and Barbara at the ol' Satin Ballroom (how many of you out there still miss that monthly dance?). I was stumbling along as a beginner in Balboa, and I can't remember exactly how it came about, but there they were, like little "Balboa Angels" -- smiling, and then offering graciously to help me. I'll just never forget that. At that time they offered not only help but life-long friendship.
I know that I am just one of literally countless others who had the same wonderful experience with this beautiful dance couple.
I know Barbara must be heartbroken to have lost her dance partner and friend... Know we are all thinking of you.
Here's a short quote from Barbara about what happened to Sam: "Sam fought his long battle with diabetes, kidney failure, heart attacks, pneumonia, poor circulation, and failing eye sight. The disease won. He was not willing to live, as sick as he was, but not willing to die. He just let God take control."
Please take time to take a look at Sam and Barbara on our Clip of the Week... I'm sure you'll fall in love with them, too.
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?
Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."
THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:
1. Having fun! (Fun)
2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)
1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).
2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
