BIG BANDSTHEY KEEP OUR FEET AND HEARTS DANCING!![]()
Music... what would we swing dancers do without it? It's truly what makes us dance! I wanted to dedicate this week's newsletter to live music and especially "Big Band" music. We are so lucky to have all found each other -- a gang of dancing friends who love to swing dance. And because we love it so much, we have our very own club, Rusty's Rhythm Club, in which to dance each and every Wednesday. And because of this we have (as they used to say in the ol' days) that "Extra Added Attraction" -- LIVE music! There's just nothing like live music to make you feel like you are five feet off that dance floor. And when there is a Big Band, well that's just about the very best! I started bringing Big Bands to the Rhythm Club early on... but just very occasionally. But because of your great support (you show up and pay the cover happily!), I have been able to schedule big bands nearly once a month now. Wow! Without you showing up, we just couldn't do it. This week is one of our special "Big Band Nites" -- we've got Swing City, and they are guaranteed to put the happiness in your happy feet. Thanks again for your on-going support of live music at The Rhythm Club! MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THESE |

GLENN MILLER IN CANADA -- "When Glenn Miller appeared at Mutual Street Arena in Toronto on January 23, 1942, not a single ticket was available at the door - all 6,000 seats had been sold in advance. My parents recalled that scalpers were receiving an amazing five dollars for a ticket costing a dollar and a half. My parents were among the thousands of fans who were lucky enough to grab tickets ahead of time. "
This is a wonderful tribute site to Glenn Miller by Canadian Miller fan, Peter Young. I am sure you'll enjoy the photos, the stories, and all the extras.
I had the great fortune to tour with a Glenn Miller Orchestra over in Europe from 1996-1998 as a featured dancer. We toured a total of 51 cities throughout England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Belgium, and France. The band was fronted by Glenn Miller's nephew, John Miller -- a great guy and fantastic performer!
The Brits have a special place in their hearts for Glenn Miller. The reason for this was Miller's personal feeling that it was important his band be as close as possible to the fighting troops. In mid-1944 he had the group transferred from the U.S. to London, where they were renamed the American Band of the Allied Expeditionary Force. While in the United Kingdom the band gave more than 800 performances to an estimated one million Allied servicemen.
On December 15, 1944, Miller, now a major, was scheduled to fly from the United Kingdom to Paris to play for the soldiers who had recently liberated Paris. His plane departed from RAF Twinwood Farm, Clapham, Bedfordshire, but disappeared over the English Channel and was never found. Miller's disappearance remains a mystery; neither his remains nor the wreckage of his plane were ever recovered from the water.
Long live Glenn Miller.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!
