EXCITING NEWS -- RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB

You will have received the earlier email describing my excitement about this month's lineup at the Rhythm Club. We have three just great weeks to enjoy that include a new band for us, dancing combined with good deeds, and our annual Halloween Costume Party Dance!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11
HOT CLUB FRANCE STYLE BAND "BENNY BRYDERN QUARTET"

For years, I've been dreaming about finding a band that played the Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli sound -- that "Hot Club of France" 1930's style (see Link of the Week) -- and I've found them with the Benny Brydern Quartet. You're gonna know most of the players already with Benny Brydern on swing violin (if you're Janet Klein fans, you know him well), John Reynolds (guitarist extraordinaire), and on drums & guitar, surprise, Jonathan Stout (Campus Five fame). So there's three of the four. Click HERE to listen this wonderful group.

I know there are loads of Django/Grappelli fans out there in our swing world, so please help me spread the word -- and let's pack the floor tomorrow nite!

Yves and Michelle took Rusty to the door of the Hot Club of France (HCF) this summer during her Paris visit!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18
CANCER RESEARCH FUN-RAISER

Doing our bit to join in on the 24-Hour Dance-A-Thon, we'll be hosting a Fun-Raiser at the Rhythm Club. Our cover is $12 that night, and we are asking, if you wish, to add another $3 to go to the Dance-A-Thon's donation for Cancer research. We'll also have GREAT raffle prizes if you wish to participate some more. Live music that night provided by Jumpin' Joz. For details about the Dance-A-Thon, click HERE.

Special thanks to Kenn Horowitz for organizing our Rhythm Club Fun-Raiser! If you have anything you would like to donate for our prizes, he'll be at the club tomorrow, or you may email him - KENN.

We've done some amazing good works at the Rhythm Club in the past, and if you would like to read about them, click HERE (scroll down to "Fundraisers")

Come along and be a "Swing Angel"!

"WHAT SHALL I WEAR?"

Many people, who've not yet been to our annual party, wonder about whether or not to dress up. The answer would be YES! You can see by the above photo from last year's party, dancers love to go for it whenever there's a theme. Our only recommendation is to make sure you can still dance! (We don't recommend masks, for safety's sake.)

WHAT IS THE MASTER TRACK?

Rusty and Ron now have a series for those who want to take their dancing to the next level. The course, entitled "The Master Track - It's All About You" is limited to twelve students. The June-July series is fully booked, but we are already taking reservations for September-October.

The eight-week course focuses on your own dancing. Each week, Rusty and Ron will be working with each of the students individually and as a group in a series of exercises and challenges. The students will be video taped each week, the tapes will be studied as a group (in Lindy By The Sea's traditional upbeat, encouraging, and friendly environment) to examine individual areas of goals and progress. At the end of the eight week course, each student is presented with a dvd of their own dancing to track improvement and continue with on-going skills.

This course will start up every eight weeks. The total cost for all eight classes, and the dvd is $100/per student, and includes a personal dvd of your work throughout the course. What a value!

LINDY HOP FOR LIFE - DANCE-A-THON -- The Dance-a-thon is a 24 hour swing dance in Irvine, CA intended to raise funds for the City of Hope Hospital. All of the participants, board members, bands, teachers, dj's and performers are volunteers. The venue is donated by the Boys and Girls Club of Irvine. The dates are 10am Saturday Nov. 11th - 10am Sunday Nov. 12th, 2006

Last year swing dancers raised over $52,000, an impressive number for any first year charity event. This year our goal is $100,000.

We've got loads of dancers participating, and yours truly is teaching one of the classes -- "Tap Dancing For Lindy Hoppers".

We are also be doing a bit of fundraising at the Rhythm Club Wednesday, October 18th, for the Dance-A-thon. (Stay tuned for more details.)

Check it out! Make the world a better place through swing dancing!

REDHOTJAZZ.COM/HOTCLUBFRANCE -- This site will please music enthusiasts, as it's just packed with information about our early swing music. I've linked you directly to the Hot Club France page, so that you can read about this amazing group of influential jazz artists. A real plus on this site is the audio clips -- and, believe me, there are loads of Hot Club France audio clips for your listening pleasure (I know what you'll be doing at work today -- exposing your office to the fantastic sounds of Django and Grappelli!

Brief History of the HCF

The Quintette of the Hot Club of France is generally considered by jazz historians to be the greatest of all European Jazz bands. The group started out as an informal jam session that was held between sets at the Hotel Claridge (37 Rue Francois 1er.) in Paris in 1933. Stephan Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Roger Chaput and Louis Vola were playing in the hotel dance band at the time. Between sets they would play jazz together in a back room at the hotel. One day Pierre Nourry and Charles Delaunay of Hot Club witnessed one of these sessions and arranged that the group record it's first records for the Ultraphone label in December of 1934. The group went on to become very popular in Europe both on records and as a live act. The group disbanded in 1939 as war broke out in Europe. The band was playing in London when England declared war on Germany. Stephane Grappelli decided to stay in London and while Django Reinhardt returned to Paris. They would not see each other again until after the war in 1946.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
