ON THE ROAD AGAIN - FRANCE

THE RHYTHM PALS TAKE CHARGE

Each year I get invited to teach in many wonderful places. New York, of course, was a dream come true. Again this year I hit the road, this time I return for my third teaching trip to Norway. But first, a stop, just for myself, to France and Spain.

When you receive this newsletter and are taking a break to catch up with our Lindy scene, the chances are I just might be dancing on the banks of the Seine (see Link of the Week... and you can read about their weekly dance there!).

I hope you are all know that one of the added "benefits" of being a Lindy Hopper is that you have hospitality anywhere a Lindy Hopper exists. Last week our very own Penny & Rick Wirshing hosted a couple from France -- Olivier & Natasha. All you have to do is go to the local Lindy website where you're planning to visit, pop them an email with questions, such as: "Will you have any special events while I'm there?" If you'd rather stay with someone rather than in a hotel or hostel, this is also easily arranged. Just shoot an email letting them know your dates, and (in this case) voila! you're all set.

I had planned on going to the Balboa Camp (as a camper) in the South of France before teaching in Norway, but when I hurt my knee recently I realized that I had to conserve my knee for my teaching obligation which followed the Bal Camp -- so I had to change my plans and not attend the camp this year (boo hoo). Suddenly I now had a full week (where the camp would have been) and no place to stay. At Camp Hollywood, I asked Olivier & Natasha (the Frenchies who I had arranged hospitality for with Penny & Rick) if they knew anyone in Paris with whom I could stay. The next day there was an email on my desktop from my new host! It was that easy.

So don't be shy to take advantage, whether it's for home hospitality or just visiting and dancing, of your Lindy Hop friendship and help around the world. It's like a swingout... what goes around, comes around (ugh... that was a bad one).

Have a great summer, I can't wait to report back to you.

RHYTHM PALS TAKE CHARGE

Thanks in advance to everyone who helps keep things going in my absence. It's so great to know that our scene can roll right along when I'm the road! Thanks to Ron, for teaching the Tuesday nite classes (and it's not too late to join! Just show up, he'll register you). Thanks to all the Rhythm Club volunteers for keeping that night going: Jessica, Capt Fun, Julia, Peter, Nathan & Crystal "The Sweethearts of Swing", Robert "The Professor" Vangor, Mike, Jon, Jamie, Sharlene... and anyone else who pitches in.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE RHYTHM CLUB WHILE I'M GONE!!

We have a great line-up of bands for August. I thank you in advance for supporting live music and making a point to go out dancing at the Rhythm Club while I'm away. I know I won't be here to nudge you out of your cozy homes to do the "turn around" (that awful moment when it seems so nice to stay home instead of turning around to go out dancing... but once you get to the club you are soooooo happy you did it and can't imagine why you almost didn't!). So take this as your "gentle shove" from Rusty for the next few weeks to get to the club and support those live bands -- they love coming to the Rhythm Club and playing for you, because you really appreciate them, and they tell me over, and over again how much they feel that.

Rusty and Ron now have a series for those who want to take their dancing to the next level. The course, entitled "The Master Track - It's All About You" is limited to twelve students. The June-July series is fully booked, but we are already taking reservations for September-October.

The eight-week course focuses on your own dancing. Each week, Rusty and Ron will be working with each of the students individually and as a group in a series of exercises and challenges. The students will be video taped each week, the tapes will be studied as a group (in Lindy By The Sea's traditional upbeat, encouraging, and friendly environment) to examine individual areas of goals and progress. At the end of the eight week course, each student is presented with a dvd of their own dancing to track improvement and continue with on-going skills.

This course will start up every eight weeks. The total cost for all eight classes, and the dvd is $100/per student, and includes a personal dvd of your work throughout the course. What a value!

      * Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

      1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

      1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

      2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
