CAMP HOLLYWOOD A BLAST

ESPECIALLY PROUD OF OUR NJC CONTESTANTS

We had more of our gang competing in the NJC (National Jitterbug Competition at Camp Hollywood) than ever. I may be leaving someone out, but I saw out there: Carmeta, "The Professor", Michael, and our Pro-Am competitors Akiko, Roy, and Kiersten. Except for Michael & Robert, it was their first time out there, and they were competing against Lindy Hoppers with 2-10 years of experience! So the fact that they even got out on that floors was great and a real accomplishment. You can't imagine how proud Gio, Ron, and I were to see you on that dance floor giving it all your enthusiasm and love of dance.

Pro-Am competitors, L-R: Akiko, Ron, Kiersten, Roy, & Rusty

I am also especially "gloat-y" to have had Ron and Gio involved! Gio had a strong presence, competing in several categories ("next year, I'm going to enter ALL the categories!", Gio), and Ron, who was a first time judge in the Team Division. Well done, boys!

STAYING COOL THIS SUMMER WITH SWING AT LINDY BY THE SEA

Oye, we're all melting. (Literally?). So how do you stay cool and swing dance at the same time? Well, it may not be possible, but we're gonna try.

Tuesdays, we've got great classes for you -- the Track, and then a Featured Class of real cool-down ideas: "Slow Dancing" and "Breezy-Cool Lindy Moves". We promise, you'll get your exercise and barely break a sweat.

This summer we're gonna be taking a break from Sunday classes, so go out and swim, sit in the hammock and read while drinking a nice cool lemonade, or go to the beach.

"SECRET AGENT MAN CLASS" TO PERFORM AT RHYTHM CLUB!

Last year's Secret Agent Man Class

They've been working hard for two months on their routine to "Secret Agent Man" and now it's time for them to perform it at the Rhythm Club. So next Wednesday, August 2nd, drum roll please, they'll be performing for YOU. Some of them have never been before an audience before, and they are so excited (probably a bit nervous, too). So make sure to be there to cheer them on. It's a great nite to bring family and friends, as it's our "cheap" nite -- AND there's a lesson! So, come one, come all.

Rusty and Ron now have a series for those who want to take their dancing to the next level. The course, entitled "The Master Track - It's All About You" is limited to twelve students. The June-July series is fully booked, but we are already taking reservations for September-October.

The eight-week course focuses on your own dancing. Each week, Rusty and Ron will be working with each of the students individually and as a group in a series of exercises and challenges. The students will be video taped each week, the tapes will be studied as a group (in Lindy By The Sea's traditional upbeat, encouraging, and friendly environment) to examine individual areas of goals and progress. At the end of the eight week course, each student is presented with a dvd of their own dancing to track improvement and continue with on-going skills.

This course will start up every eight weeks. The total cost for all eight classes, and the dvd is $100/per student, and includes a personal dvd of your work throughout the course. What a value!

Swing Shift

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
