when he felt dislocated in his universe."

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR BEING SWING ANGELS!
THE USC & LOYOLA MARYMOUNT STUDENTS HAD A SUPER TIME
AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

Thanks to each and every one of you who put on your wings last week at the Rhythm Club and welcomed the USC and Loyola Marymount college students by dancing with them. They were on cloud nine, smiling, and literally jumping up and down. And it was because you made their first swing dance experience a blast!

I remember when I first started swing dancing hearing a teacher say that you could make or break a newcomer's first swing dance experience and make a difference whether or not they ever walked through that door again. Be assured that all of you made a difference last week and we'll be seeing those students again!

There was a real jewel of a moment early on. As I suspected, all the Loyola students were shyly gathered in the back of the room so I went over there to them a pep talk. Just as the next song began, literally a "wave" of you came over and one by one asked each and every one of those students to dance. There wasn't a student left who wasn't dancing with one of you "swing angels"! It was indeed fantastic! Well done to you!

"BRING A BUDDY" MONTH!
FREE CLASSES

So here's how it works: You bring a new student to Level 1, and you get the entire series for FREE!!!!*

This is such a fun idea in that it:

1. Brings new "fishies" into our little pond.
2. Keeps our swing dance scene living that much longer.
3. You get to review your basics, or
4. You can go through as an "opposite"(ever wanted to learn to lead? follow?)
5. Your friends have a friendly face in the crowd.
AND
6. These brand new students get to be in a class where just about half of the students already know how to dance! So they really get a head start!

The new Sunday Series begins on October 30th at 2:00pm (Rebekah Hall).

*If you are a current or former Lindy By The Sea student,
you take the entire series for free and your "Buddy" needs to be a new student.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS MIDNIGHT SATURDAY THE 29TH

By the way, Sunday the 30th is the end of the end (boo hoo) of Daylight Savings Time. "Spring ahead fall behind...."

TUESDAY FEATURED CLASS - BALBOA!

Yes, we are entering our fourth month of Balboa (does this mean after nine months, we're Balboa dancers?). Anyway, everyone is doing so great in their Balboa, we couldn't resist continuing on. Now the fun begins! Everyone's got their basics and we can build on some very nifty variations.

If you already know your Bal basics, you are most welcome to join this class.

GOLDEN TICKET
"Now that's a deal"

If you would like to take advantage of our best offer, sign up for a Golden Ticket --$100, all the classes you want in the month series, or $90 (!!!!) pre-registered).

DANCE CLASSES! WHAT A BARGAIN!

We have a lot of wonderful options at Lindy By The Sea. (and $40 if it can go towards the "Custom Class" for those Advanced/Intermediate students). What a deal. THE AVALON BALL -- ON CATALINA ISLAND
LET'S HAVE DINNER TOGETHER! 4:30

There are quite a few of us who are going out to Catalina Island this weekend and we thought it would be fun meet up for dinner on Saturday night at Antonio's Pizzeria. This is a casual and fun restaurant right on the waterfront. Let's meet for dinner at 4:30 and then head over to ballroom at 5:45 for the "grand climb" (if you've never before been to the Casino Ballroom, you'll know what I mean when you go there for the first time). Let me know if you'll be joining us for dinner, so I can make the reservation by emailing me info@rustyfrank.com The dance is from 6-10pm.

CONTACT LIST -- EMAIL ME YOUR CELL PHONE NUMBER

I am compiling a cell phone list, so if people want to find each other throughout the day, they can (cell phones work great out there!). Email me info@rustyfrank.com your name and cell phone number and when I get all the numbers, I'll email the list back to you.

24-HOUR CANCER DANCE-A-THON IN O.C.

Our good friend, Shesa Marvin, down in O.C. is putting on th 24 Hour Cancer Dance-A-Thon, and here's a note from him:

We are just 2 weeks away from the 24 Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon. We have 300 swing dancers on board so far but we still have room for more. The event kicks off 10am on Saturday November 5th and goes till 10am Sunday November 6th at The Boys and Girls Club gym in Irvine, CA. We have live bands booked every other hour on Saturday and a late night All Star Jam on Sunday Morning. The best Southern California teachers are teaching lessons every other hour so you don't even have to be a good dancer yet. The rest of the time is filled with fun contests, performances, and DJ'd swing music. We will have plenty of coffee, water, and food, plus a spaghetti dinner and a pancake breakfast.

Here is how it works: The dance-a-thon is a fund raiser for cancer research at The City of Hope. Dancers are organized into teams that must keep at least one dancer on the floor for 24 hours. It's like a relay so you only participate as little or much as you can. There are many teams organized that need more people so you don't need to know anyone. To participate you can register on http://www.danceathon.org and ask to be on a team. All you have to raise is $20. We've made fund raising easy by offering an automatic e-mail form. If you fill out the list of names and e-mails of people you know the site will take care of the rest. The average donation has been $25. It's easy!

Cancer has directly affected almost everyone and we want to help. Join us in our efforts to help find a cure for cancer. We can do it by swing dancing! Look around and register on http://www.danceathon.org. Call Shesha at 1-866-OCSWING or e-mail shesha@ocswing.com with questions. Lindy Hop for Life!

THIS WEEKEND! WHY NOT JOIN US?!

AVALON BALL: Try to imagine this: Going on a morning boat ride. Spending the day on a beautiful island. Hanging out with your swing dancing friends for a walk, a game of miniature golf, a meal. Then dressing up in your dancing duds and walking into the historic Art Deco Avalon Casino Ballroom. That's not all! Imagine, as you walk in the ballroom, you hear the strains of Mora's Modern Rhythmists, watch the dynamic Lindy Hop team -- The Hollywood Hornets, hear the Master of Tin Pan Alley, Richard Halpern, all presided over by Master of Ceremonies Maxwell DeMille! Why not give yourself a treat!

We're going to be making a cell phone list of all the lindy hoppers for our "gang" who are out there and plan to meet up for dinner or lunch or something! See you there?

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
