RUSTY HEADS FOR THE HILLS
Many of you have expressed concern for my mental and physical health (in your sweet way), thinking that I am overworked. I always tell you not to worry, that, of course, I love what I do, etc., etc. But, there is a little bit of truth to your concerns (aren't we all overworked?!), and, every now and again I try to sneak away for a few days and get revitalized with a nature encounter. During the last three years, with the excellent help of Ron and Gio, I have been able to really do this!
Last weekend, I joined some ol' college friends of mine who own land in the Sierras for an "Artists Weekend." Four of us spent a peaceful weekend in the log cabin they had built! There was no electricity, and a wood-burning stove was used for cooking, oil lanterns used for reading at night. It was heavenly.
I got to do my five favorite things: eat, sleep, read, hike, and swing... in a hammock.
I also had the great joy of driving my "Little Red" (my 1993 Miata) over the high road home... the 89 to the 395 to the 14 to the 5 to the... Anyone who has ever driven the 395 before knows the ecstasy of that beautiful scenery (adjacent to such dull places as Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon national parks!). I was in heaven.
I gave myself a special treat and took some extra time to drive through Lone Pine -- where many old Westerns were filmed. The Chamber of Commerce gives you a map and you drive for one hour on dirt roads through rock canyons. Next time, I'm gonna actually get out of the car and hike around!
Thanks to Gio and Jessica for holding down the fort on Sunday so I could take this little respite.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT STUDENTS COMING TO THE RHYTHM CLUB TO-NITE
For years I have been trying to get the students of the Ballroom Dance Club of Loyola Marymount to come over to the Rhythm Club. No success. The reason is that they actually meet on Wednesday nites! Dang!
But, persistence seems to have paid off.
Tonight, at last, the Ballroom students are taking a "field trip" to Rusty's Rhythm Club!
Won't you all be "swing angels" and welcome them?
It'll be easy to do. You'll see a clump of nervous looking college-aged students viewing the floor from the bar area or the back of the room. This is when you fondly remember your first time at a swing dance club, and march right up to those students with a great big smile on your face and ask one of them to dance. And, while you're at it, when you bring them off the floor, why not introduce them to another Rhythm Club regular and pass them off for another dance!
Thanks to all of you for making the Rhythm Club a truly welcoming and friendly place! Here's a letter that came in last week:
October 6, 2005
My name is Jeanette. I know we have never met before but I attended the Rhythm Club last night for the first time. I wanted to send you a quick note to say Thank you for such a wonderful place and a wonderful time I had.
I am a previous swing dancer. I started dancing at age 12 and stayed with it for over 12 years. A few years ago I stopped due to work becoming too hectic. When I found your club so close to my home the other day I made a new commitment to start back again. I enjoyed myself so much last night, met so many good people and amazing dancers, I felt alive again. I am a bit rusty (no pun intended) with my moves and have decided to take your class this Sunday.
Thank you so much for running the club. I know that is alot of work, and keeping such a fun environment! I look forward to meeting you.
