IT'S TONITE!
LET'S HAVE A DANCING GREAT TIME AND HELP THE BIRTHPLACE OF JAZZ!

Tonight! Tonight! Tonight! Dress up. Dance to a big band. Have a great time. Get some real cool stuff. And make a difference. What a great way to spend an evening!

Yes, tonight is our Hurricane Relief Fundraiser at Rusty's Rhythm Club.

HURRICANE RELIEF FUNDRAISER AT THE RHYTHM CLUB
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH 2005

We've got the Fabulous Esquires Big Band to dance to. It's "Dress Up" nite (I'll be wearing a red velvet gown, and I've heard of at least three guys who are going to wear white tie and tails! -- so go for it!).

And... we've got a terrific list of Raffle and Silent Auction Items for our dance-community fundraiser.

NEW ORLEANS

I have been thinking about our effort a great deal. I am always deeply touched when, in the past, we have pulled together to add a little bit more financial aid in times of need. This time it struck me that there is a tight bond for us dancers. Where did the music we dance to originate? Yes, it's early roots were in New Orleans. "The birthplace of jazz." How many times have you heard that phrase linked with New Orleans?

Tonight, as we pull together to help, it is with loving hearts, compassion, and a sense of affinity that we do so.

HOW DOES OUR FUNDRAISER WORK?
WHO IS THE BENEFICIARY?
WHY THEM?

Okay, I'll start from the top and work my way down.

How Does The Fundraiser Work?

There are three ways you can contribute tonight:
1. Simply bring your check or cash and leave it in our Top Hat at the door stop (where you pay your cover)
2. Buy Raffle tickets to win one of the great prizes (Raffle tickets are $2.00 each).
3. Bid on the Silent Auction items (I have listed all the items below)

Who is the Beneficiary?

The American Red Cross. To be specific - it's Disaster Relief Fund.

Remember, checks should be made payable "The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund."

Why them?

In 1989, I was personally rescued by The Red Cross after the San Francisco Earthquake. I watched them become fully operational in 1/2 hour after the quake hit. I utilized their free services on three occasions: I ate from their food kitchen (along with Joe Dimaggio -- another Marina resident), I used their bulletin boards to help an 11-year old girl I found wandering the streets find her parents, and I used their counselling services to understand the impact of post traumatic shock syndrome. Once you've seen The Red Cross and all their volunteers in action, you never forget. To read the complete story click HERE.

There will be sheets of papers in front of each item, with a starting bid price. You then write your name and bid that will be somewhat higher than that bid. The next person who wants that item puts their name and somewhat higher bid on the line under yours. And so on. Pretty soon we've raised a bunch of money!

MENU UPDATED ON HOMEPAGE
THANKS TO STANLEY SHEFF AKA MAXWELL DEMILLE

http://swingshiftontap.com
or
http://rustyfrank.com
(it all takes you to the same place -- our page!)

I wanted to thank Stanley Sheff for taking that extra time in keeping our webpage looking so great. This week he updated our homepage menu bar. Now all the buttons are alphabetical (go figure!), and there's a new button "More Fun Stuff." That's where I've to the following:

NEW WEB PAGES ON OUR SITE

There are so many ideas I have for the website, but I couldn't figure out how to have them all on there until yesterday. I'm gonna put on a button that simply says "more pages." There you'll find some fun pages like:

What got you started swing dancing? This will be a page of your individual stories. You can send them to me at your leisure, and I'll post them onto that page.

Swing dancers travel the world This page will show you wearing your Rhythm Club bowling shirt or t-shirt at some famous place around the world (the Eiffel Tower, anyone?). Here's our first example:

Jeff & Taffy in Cairo, Egypt... where are you going? Don't forget to pack that shirt!

WHAT GOT YOU STARTED SWING DANCING?

Yes, "The thing about swing dancing..." is so many things! It's fun. It's challenging. It's good exercise. It's a great way to meet a bunch of nice people. And, it's contagious! Each on of has that moment of epiphany, when we saw something that made us all just HAVE to do it!

Read our first story from Jeremy Norman... then submit yours!

What was the moment that made you just "have to do it"? Where were you? What did you see?

I would love to hear what your swing dance epiphany was! If you would like to share it in our weekly newsletter, write it in an email to me. It would really be fun to hear how each of us got involved. Send yours to: info@swingshiftontap.com

Rendezvous Ballroom, location 1952

RENDEZVOUS BALLROOM -- THE QUEEN OF SWING: As two of great Raffle Prizes tonight include full camp passes for the 2006 Balboa Rendezvous, we thought it would be fun for you to read about this historic ballroom. Read it and weep! (Still waiting for them to invent that time machine, as this place is definitely on my list!)

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.

"How do I join?"...
Right now, fill in your email address
and click the Yahoo log (that's it!):

Subscribe to SwingShiftRhythmClub

Then you will receive updates of activities (or you can organize one yourself!). Check the yahoogroup "Swing Shift Rhythm Club" calendar here for postings of upcoming events.

Join us in making the world a better place through dancing!

Thank you for joining!
