KATRINA...
WHAT CAN WE DANCERS DO TO HELP?

HURRICANE RELIEF FUNDRAISER AT THE RHYTHM CLUB
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH 2005

It seems that we just worked so hard to raise $4,000 for Tsunami relief... And now once again nature slams into our planet. I know most all of you are planning on giving to some aid program, or perhaps you have done it already. For those of you who haven't reached into your pocket books yet, we'll be having a Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fundraiser a week from Wednesday at Rusty's Rhythm Club.

This is a chance for us to pull together as a dance community and present our fundraising efforts in one clump to the Red Cross. Sometimes when you do something on your own -- like writing a $5-$20 check, it feels small and insignificant (even though you know in your heart it's not). But if we put all these checks together and we have a sum more like $1,000 then it feels like it can help make a difference.

Last week, I got a message on my answering machine that went something like this: "Hey Rusty, this is Wolf here with the Fabulous Esquires. I know that you have done fundraisers at your club before and we thought that if you wanted to have our night (the 14th) at the Rhythm Club be a fundraiser, we would like to donate $150 to it." If you know me at all, you know tears welled up in my eyes - I was that touched.

Now I would like to leave it up to you -- our South Bay swing dance family -- should we keep it simple? Just have a hat at the door? Or should we try for something on another level? Think about it. We can talk about it at class tonight, or email me your ideas. It's next week, so there's not a lot of time.

NEW TUESDAY CLASS TIMES!
7:30
8:30
9:30

As Ron and I are resuming our teaching at USC, our Tuesday nite classes need to be moved forward a 1/2 hour. Make sure to note the new times. We'll be at USC for the next ten weeks.

SUNDAYS -- DESPERATE FOR MORE LEADS!!!!!!

Okay all your leaders (and wanabe leaders) out there. We are desperate. We had 34 new students Sunday and twice as many followers than leaders. Those poor women, every other time we called "rotate" they found themselves standing alone. (Do you hear the violins playing?)

Is there anything you can do to help rectify this?

* Have you ever wanted to brush up on your leading?

* Do you know some fellows out there who have shown interest in swing dancing?

* Are you a follower who has always wanted to learn what's on the other side?

We can use any and all of you! There are three weeks left in this series, and we'll be reviewing all the material taught last week this coming Sunday -- so the newbies need not worry. Thanks for your help.

BAND "SET LISTS" AT RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB

We've started something new at Rusty's Rhythm Club -- posting the band's "Set Lists". Last week was the first time we placed the list on the bar piano, and what a hit! Everyone was buzzing around the list throughout the evening. First, to see what was the name of that great song. Second, to see what's coming up. Third, maybe to save some special dances! (Dance cards, anyone?)

Take a look! It's a great way to get to know the music we love!

Yes, it's that time again, "The First Wednesday of the Month" when we have our Beginner Swing Dance Class at the Rhythm Club. We offer this super easy class for those who just want to check out the scene. Maybe they're not sure enough about swing dancing to sign up for a full 4-week Lindy By The Sea course yet... This class is just meant to give them a "taste" of the dance and the people, the environment, so to speak. Let all your co-workers, friends, relatives, and others (?) know about it. Oh yes, this is also a nice class for our shy beginner students who have been trying to get up their nerve o come to the Rhythm Club. Take the class and you'll meet a bunch of people right off the bat.

NEW WEB PAGES ON OUR SITE

There are so many ideas I have for the website, but I couldn't figure out how to have them all on there until yesterday. I'm gonna put on a button that simply says "more pages." There you'll find some fun pages like:

What got you started swing dancing? This will be a page of your individual stories. You can send them to me at your leisure, and I'll post them onto that page.

Swing dancers travel the world This page will show you wearing your Rhythm Club bowling shirt or t-shirt at some famous place around the world (the Eiffel Tower, anyone?). Here's our first example:

WHAT GOT YOU STARTED SWING DANCING?

Yes, "The thing about swing dancing..." is so many things! It's fun. It's challenging. It's good exercise. It's a great way to meet a bunch of nice people. And, it's contagious! Each on of has that moment of epiphany, when we saw something that made us all just HAVE to do it!

What was the moment that made you just "have to do it"? Where were you? What did you see?

I would love to hear what your swing dance epiphany was! If you would like to share it in our weekly newsletter, write it in an email to me. It would really be fun to hear how each of us got involved. Send yours to: info@swingshiftontap.com

GIRLS FROM MARS: Our house DJ extraordinaire -- The Professor -- is constantly introducing us to the most danceable of swing music. Last week he introduced me to a previously-unknown-to-me swing group Girls From Mars. They are like the Boswell Sisters and the Andrews Sisters combined! Here's their site so you, too, can take a gander and a listen. Thanks, Professor!

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast). Basically, we swing like a gate!

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
