Hal Takir dips partner in Los Angeles in the 1930s! Many of you who were at Camp Hollywood may have seen Hal dancing with his wife, Marge, and didn't even know it! He was sitting over with all the other legends. Aren't we lucky to have many of these legends still with us!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Once a year, I take a real vacation, not one of my "work" trips (where I'm the luckiest gal in the world and get to teach lindy and tap internationally). Thanks to the fabulous Rhythm Pals, Gio and Ron, and the fabulous support team (Jessica, Glenn, Jeff, Katie, Jon, Sharlene, Peter, Nathan, Crystal, and Professor Vangor) I can actually take a vacation! Whaa hoo.

This year (actually this coming Sunday) I am going to Israel with my family for a cousins Bar Mitzvah. I'll be joining my father, my eldest brother David, his wife and three kids on a seven day trip to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. I have not been to the country since 1986, and can't wait to see the changes and advances. When I was last there, the country seemed more like a Third World place.... six day work week, no access to many of the basic amenities of life...

I also had been very involved in "Operation Moses", and had made two trips to Ethiopia myself as a small and early part of this effort. I am very eager to see how the Ethiopians have integrated into the culture there. I'll be going to museums, taking walking tours, and getting in some real quality time with my niece and nephews. My little niece is always after me to teach her more swing and tap dancing... so I imagine we'll have a whole act upon my return! Watch out! Here's a picture from our latest family reunion where Sara and I performed. Am I a proud auntie or what!

I'll see you again on Tuesday and Wednesday the 23 & 24th. Meanwhile have a great time in class and at Rusty's Rhythm Club.

A LETTER FROM CHERYLL LYNN (NEW YORK)
A RHYTHM CLUB FIRST -- PROXY BIRTHDAY DANCE

Hi Rusty,

Just got your weekly update. I always look forward to your link of the week. Those Frenchies really know how to dance. They did some cool variations and are really cute to boot.

I also noticed that my birthday, August 17th, falls exactly on a Wednesday this year. If you would be so kind to grant me a birthday wish to a long distance, "proxy birthday dance" I'd be so delighted! In my place I would like Cheryl, June, Jessica (any and all women from back in "my day"). It is my birthday wish that "I", through my proxies, get a dance with Robert, Michael, Glen, Gio, again anyone who remembers me from back in "the day" as well! I love you all and look forward to when ever I get to see you next. Camp Hollywood looked like a blast. You all know how blessed you are?!

hugs!
Cheryll

TAMIE HALL RECOVERING

Tamie Hall, one of our Rhythm Club enthusiastic regulars, is recovering from surgery. Her surgery was last Thursday, and it'll be some weeks before we get to see her again on our dance floor. We sent flowers to her in the hospital from "The Rhythm Club Gang", and if you would like to chip in, see Jessica Wednesday. We all wish you a speedy recovery, Tamie. You will be muched missed!

WHAT GOT YOU STARTED SWING DANCING?

Yes, "The thing about swing dancing..." is so many things! It's fun. It's challenging. It's good exercise. It's a great way to meet a bunch of nice people. And, it's contagious! Each on of has that moment of epiphany, when we saw something that made us all just HAVE to do it!

What was the moment that made you just "have to do it"? Where were you? What did you see?

I would love to hear what your swing dance epiphany was! If you would like to share it in our weekly newsletter, write it in an email to me. It would really be fun to hear how each of us got involved. Send yours to: info@swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.

"How do I join?"...
