"BIG BAND BLOWS THE CEILING OFF AT THE RHYTHM CLUB"

Well, that will certainly be the headline after tomorrow nite's dance at Rusty's Rhythm Club! Chester Whitmore's Opus One Big Band heads over for a return engagement. Not only is Chester's big outfit a tremendously fun band to dance to, he also goes to great lengths to delve into the Swing archives to find rare and fantastic tunes for us dancers. If I had to compare his band to one of the past, I know it would be The Count Basie Orchestra. Chester's orchestra has that "big fat" sound -- really drivin' and hittin'. So won't you join me at the club on Wednesday?

I especially want to invite all our new beginners! You are most welcome. We are looking forward to getting you started. Remember, we were all there once, too. We know what it feels like! So don't be scared, just come along and join us for a really fun night!

POLLIWOG PARK A GREAT TIME

Lindy By The Sea Dancers wow the crowd at Polliwog Park last Sunday. Spot Jessica dancing with Ron in the lower left hand corner!

Boy oh boy, did we have fun at Polliwog Park last Sunday! Throngs of dancers crowded the floor to dance to Mora's Modern Swingtet -- and for FREE. Thousands of on-lookers sat above on the sloping hillside in rapped envy. After we did the Shim Sham, throngs surged down this very same hillside to find out how they could learn to do that! Swing holds its appeal.

Polliwog is a particularly fun time for me, as I get to see students past, present, and future. I say future because it seems to me that about 10% of our Lindy By The Sea students come from Polliwog Park dances. Let's hear it for dancing in public places!

I've loaded a bunch of pictures in a new scrapbook -- have a gander: SCRAPBOOK 80 POLLIWOG PARK DANCE.

WHAT GOT YOU STARTED SWING DANCING?

Yes, "The thing about swing dancing..." is so many things! It's fun. It's challenging. It's good exercise. It's a great way to meet a bunch of nice people. And, it's contagious! Each on of has that moment of epiphany, when we saw something that made us all just HAVE to do it!

What was the moment that made you just "have to do it"? Where were you? What did you see?

I would love to hear what your swing dance epiphany was! If you would like to share it in our weekly newsletter, write it in an email to me. It would really be fun to hear how each of us got involved. Send yours to: info@swingshiftontap.com

LINDY HOP LINKS: For all you summer travellers... here's the page for you! Our pal, Margie Kate, has been keeping this page alive for as long as we can remember. And this page is just part of her amazing website - Lindyhopping.com - where you can find out just about anything re swing dancing. One of the greatest benefits of being a lindy hopper is that wherever you go you have friends and a place to dance! Before you hop on the plane for that summer trip, why not take a minute to see what's hoppin' swing-wise in that locale! Happy dancing.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
