50'S SOCK HOP THIS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3RD
AT RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB

Here's a reminder right up front that we are celebrating the beginning of August with a 50's Sock Hop at Rusty's Rhythm Club. Pull out your bowling shirts, poodle skirts, jeans, and Brill Cream and let's dance up a storm to The Hollywood Combo. And, there's the beginner class at 7:30! Woo hoo!!

ANOTHER GREAT CAMP HOLLYWOOD

Another group picture ("Prom Nite").
Joining us are Bill (Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra, 3rd from right top row) and Pops (Stompy Jones, bottom on floor next to Rusty).

Congratulations to Hilary Alexander for putting on another sensational all-swing dancing event. It seems to us that this was the best year yet.

We had at least 50 of our Lindy By The Sea - Rhythm Club crowd in attendance -- a great showing of South Bay swing dancers. There were 900 people at the Saturday night dance, and 12 different countries represented at the weekend (USA, Canada, Japan, England, Australia, Sweden, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Austria, and Germany).

L.A.'s home team, "The Hollywood Hornets", won 1st place in the Team Division competition for their third straight year. Hornets, you were in a word - phenomenal! Well done to our very own Ron and Gio for their terrific performance. Maybe we can lure them back to the Rhythm Club for another performance WITH their costumes this time.

Also, fantastic job by our pal Maxwell DeMille, who MC'd the entire event. We can't imagine the weekend without his talent and quirky vintage humor.

It was just an amazing weekend, and, to tell the truth, I can barely walk or see straight! Make sure that you mark your calendars for next year's Camp Hollywood.

I've posted some of my pictures on our scrapbook, take a look HERE.

We already have plans to dance our tootsies off right in Manhattan Beach this Sunday, August 7th. Why not join us and we'll have a big showing of swing dancing in the South Bay. Wear your Lindy By The Sea - Rhythm Club t-shirts and bowling shirts!.

JOIN US ON TUESDAYS
AUGUST FEATURED CLASS -- BALBOA!

Always a perennial favorite, Balboa is that wonderful swing dance that enables you to dance to really, REALLY (did we say "really"?) fast music... and not get too winded.

NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN -- WE NEED MORE LEADS
LINDY 1, 2, & 3

Last series the ratio was 3-1, three men to every woman, that is. This series, things seem to have shifted in the other direction (could you all please get it together and organize yourselves!) and we have 2-1, two women to every man. So, if you know any men who have been making noises about wanting to learn how to swing dance, give them a gentle shove in our direction!

THE CUSTOM CLASS
Advanced-Intermediate Lindy Hoppers

If you would like to put together a group for a future series, remember this is your chance to get exactly the training you want with the hands-on attention that only a small group class can allow. Here's how it works:

You pick the subject.
You put together your group.
You book us. (2-week or 4-week increments, Tuesdays from 9-10pm)
First come, first served.
Pricing is based on a sliding scale. (See link below)

Yes, it's that time again, "The First Wednesday of the Month" when we have our Beginner Swing Dance Class at the Rhythm Club. We offer this super easy class for those who just want to check out the scene. Maybe they're not sure enough about swing dancing to sign up for a full 4-week Lindy By The Sea course yet... This class is just meant to give them a "taste" of the dance and the people, the environment, so to speak. Let all your co-workers, friends, relatives, and others (?) know about it. Oh yes, this is also a nice class for our shy beginner students who have been trying to get up their nerve o come to the Rhythm Club. Take the class and you'll meet a bunch of people right off the bat.

AUGUST 3RD -- 50'S SOCK HOP!

It's the first Wednesday of the month. What's different? We've got LIVE music! -- The Hollywood Combo. And it's a "SOCK HOP!" nite! That's right, on Wednesday, August 3rd, bring out those Poodle Skirts, don the jeans and the white t-shirts, slick back that hair! It's 50's nite at the Rhythm Club!

Make sure to note that we've got a three of your special requests coming back in August:

WHAT GOT YOU STARTED SWING DANCING?

Yes, "The thing about swing dancing..." is so many things! It's fun. It's challenging. It's good exercise. It's a great way to meet a bunch of nice people. And, it's contagious! Each on of has that moment of epiphany, when we saw something that made us all just HAVE to do it!

What was the moment that made you just "have to do it"? Where were you? What did you see?

I would love to hear what your swing dance epiphany was! If you would like to share it in our weekly newsletter, write it in an email to me. It would really be fun to hear how each of us got involved. Send yours to: info@swingshiftontap.com

RHYTHM PALS DANCE ON MIDWAY

L-R Ron, Rusty, Mae-Lae, Gio

Last nite, the Rhythm Pals drove down to San Diego to dance aboard the aircraft carrier "Midway" for a big Disney event. Not to make you too envious, they got to dance all nite on a big dance floor just to themselves to the live music of the ten-piece band "Big Time Operator"! Envious?

ANDYANDCHRISTELLE.COM: One of the best parts of swing dance camps is the people you meet, and, in some cases, the people you get to host. This year I got to host two different couples; first the Italians, Vincenzo and Isa, and second the French, Andy and Christelle. Now it's your turn to meet the French! Take a look at this fabulous duo! I especially enjoyed the video!

Swing Shift

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
