OH BOY, NEW CLASSES START TONIGHT

Take a look below for all the details. Ron and I are looking forward to seeing you all there! (Don't forget about new start times)

RUSTY'S SWING SHIFT FLIERS WOW 'EM AT THE FAIR

San Diego Fair Scrapbook HERE

We had such fun performing at the San Diego Fair this past Sunday! I was so proud of the Fliers... this was the most demanding show they've yet done -- SIX numbers in a row! We were featured at the San Diego Showcase Stage, and hundreds of fair-goers sat in the stands enjoying first a twenty minute performance by the team, then were invited up for a short dance class, and then the Fliers repeated the ENTIRE show!

Team members Molly & Jeremy, Sarah & David, me and Ted were joined by "junior" team members for their debut peforming with us on the Dean Collins Shim Sham; Twelve year old Lauren and her 15-year old brother Ryan did a great job. You may recognize them from Sunday's classes, where they've been regulars for the past few months. Their 8-year old sister was too shy to join us on stage, but she knew the entire routine!

I was delighted that some of my very own San Diego county family was able to attend, my sister-in-law Davida (who was my "lovely assistant" in the class), her mom Ida, and my niece and nephew Sara and Jacob. You can imagine the smile on my face watching my family up there in the dance class!

Rusty reveling at her niece and nephew taking the class!

Rusty's "lovely assistant" -- her sister-in-law, Davida!

Everyone got the biggest kick with one little, tiny couple. We don't know who they were, and we don't even think they knew each other, but they were definitely the youngest students I have ever had in any class. We couldn't stop "ooh-ing" and "aah-ing" over them.

The tiniest swing dance duo ever!

In between the two shows, who should walk up to me, but old friends of mine, Leonard and Alice Maltin (Leonard Maltin may be a familiar name to you, as he is one of the country's top movie reviewers... check him out HERE or at our Link of the Week. We hadn't seen each other in quite a few years, and after the show got to sit down and catch up.

Rusty with old friends Leonard and Alice Maltin

All in all, a great day. Special thanks to Fliers team member Jeremy for arranging everything, Jennifer & Ken (who couldn't be there, but who helped coach the team), and to all our friends who made a special effort to get there and cheer us on -- it was great having your smiling faces out there in the audience, and know that we appreciate the effort you made to get there!

NEED A LAUGH?
SOME REASSURANCE THAT YOU'RE DANCING IS COMING ALONG FINE?
WATCH THIS MOVIE - "I CAN'T DANCE"

My Dad (1940s Los Angeles swing dancer sent me this clip entitled "I Can't Dance." If you think you can't dance, take a look at this and you'll be quite cheered up! And if you need a good laugh, this will give it to you. Happy viewing. Oh yes, this will also give you 50 good reasons why you might want to sign up for our Featured Class tonight "Dips and Tricks" -- one being that you don't end up on the next edition of this clip!

TAKE A LOOK AT THE CHANGES AT LINDY BY THE SEA SUMMER PROGRAM

We've made some modifications for our summer schedule, so make sure to take a look down below! We're looking forward to a great summer of dancing.

ANNOUNCING OUR SUMMER SCHEDULE!

*Monday Classes On Hiatus (NO Mondays for July & August)
*FEATURED CLASS: Dips and Tricks
*NEW! Your "Custom Class" -- to begin in August

THAT'S RIGHT, NO MONDAY NIGHT CLASSES FOR JULY & AUGUST
NEW START TIMES FOR TUESDAY CLASSES, 7pm, 8pm, 9pm
NEW SERIES BEGINS NEXT WEEK, JUNE 28th

We'll be consolidating our Featured Classes and Tracks to Tuesday nights in July & August (starting THIS coming week). In order to give Rusty's shoulder a break (no pun intended), Ron some extra time to train for the upcoming NJC with his team "The Hornets", and Ron's wife some more time with him (!), and you more time for you, we decided to not have Monday nite classes for the summer. Join us on Tuesday nites for The Track, The Featured Class, and The Zone.

FEATURED CLASS: DIPS AND TRICKS
TUESDAYS AT 8:00PM

This is a brand new Featured Class for us, and we are thrilled to be offering it.

Partnered dips are a fun and exciting element to put into your dancing, right in the middle of a song, or as a dramatic finish. Dips are easy to do, but each one has its own special technique; we will be going through just 1-2 dips each week in order to make sure that we go through all the detail that will make you a "safe" partner on the dance floor.

"Tricks" are partnered moves that have a little extruded flair. They don't involve any flips, or things like that. They do include, safe and fun little pop ups and tosses. Please make sure you are good physical shape (please no chronic serious knee, ankle, hip, neck, or arm problems that could put you at risk -- call us if you're not sure 310 606 5606).

NEW SUNDAY SERIES BEGINS JULY 3RD

Make sure to spread the word that a new series of Sunday classes begins July 3rd. What better way to spend the July 4th weekend that fun swing dance classes!

"MAD HOT BALLROOM:
ORDINARY KIDS, AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY"

A MUST SEE!

I know, I know, this has been up for three weeks now. But, hey, remember, when you GO to the movie theatre and PAY money at the box office, you get COUNTED! Then the powers that be understand that people feel that dance is important, they put more funding in the schools for dance programs and they make more movies featuring dance! So go and be counted! And then when it comes out on DVD, why not pick up a copy there, too! You get the picture. Your money will speak for you (imagine dollar bill screaming "I love dance!").

If you haven't seen it yet, may we suggest that you run, don't walk, to the nearest theatre showing this documentary. Click HERE for the official site.

From IMDB: Eleven-year-old New York City public school kids journey into the world of ballroom dancing and reveal pieces of themselves and their world along the way. Told from their candid, sometimes hilarious perspectives, these kids are transformed, from reluctant participants to determined competitors, from typical urban kids to "ladies and gentlemen," on their way to try to compete in the final city wide competition. Providing unique insight into the incredible cultural diversity that is New York City, this film profiles several kids from three schools (out of 60) at this dynamic age, when becoming that "cool" teenager vies for position with familiar innocence, while they learn the merengue, rumba, tango, the foxtrot and swing.

RUSTYFRANK.COM

Thanks to a new student recommendation, I now have my own "domain" -- "RustyFrank.com". For those of you who have trouble remember the complete name "SwingShiftOnTap.com"... here's something much easier, AND it brings you right to our site! Thanks to the entrepid Stanley Sheff, aka Maxwell DeMille, for making all this possible -- webhost extraordinaire.

MOVIE CRAZYBumping into Leonard Maltin this past Sunday made me think to put his site as our Link of the Week. I know there are many old movie buffs out there in our dance community, and this will certainly be added to your movie bookmark pages. Leonard has a wonderful site here, updated regularly, with wonderful articles about recent historic Hollywood events, movie picks, and many resources. Enjoy, fellow old-movie buffs!

Swing Shift
www.swingshiftontap.com

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).

JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.

"How do I join?"...
