RUSTY HITS THE ROAD AGAIN --
NOW IT'S PHILADELPHIA!

By the time this reaches you I shall probably be fast asleep having just returned from my world-wind teaching job in Scotland. Tomorrow, I board a plane for Philadelphia (hoping to get a load of laundry and a few moments with my cat in there!).

And now, why would I be going to these two cities in such close time proximity? There is a reason, outside of insanity!

National Tap Day.

Bill "Bojangles" Robinson

National Tap Day was declared in 1989. I was actually in Washington D.C. doing work on my tap book the DAY the bill was signed. If you are wondering what the heck "National Tap Day" is... it's basically a day set aside to honor tap dance as a uniquely American art form. Through the years, the day, May 25th (chosen as it was the birth date of one of tap's greats, Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson) has been adopted by tap dancers throughout the world as a day to celebrate.

So... in both Scotland and Philadelphia I will be participating in their National Tap Day celebrations by teaching tap in their local communities. Pretty cool, eh!

JUNE SCHEDULE POSTED
FEATURED CLASS - LINDY RUEDA!

The new schedule is posted below, so we have opened up Pre-Registration. For you Sunday Level 3 people, we're looking forward to you joining our Track and the Featured Class on Monday and/or Tuesday.

ONE WEEK OFF FOR SUNDAY PEOPLE ONLY BEFORE STARTING NEW SCHEDULE NEW SUNDAY SERIES BEGINS JUNE 5TH

After this coming Sunday's class, we will take May 29th off, and then begin our new Sunday series of classes on June 5th. Help spred the word.

MONDAY AND TUESDAY... NO BREAK FOR THE "WICKED"

We will be starting our new series on May 30th and 31st, and, as we have added a 5th week for this series, they'll be no break between series. Happy dancing! So mark it in your calendars to add one more week to this series. The price for this additional week will be $10 a class and $5 for each additional class on the same nite; and for Golden Ticket people $6 plus $3 for each additional class on same day. Remember, this is optional for you.

WHAT THE HECK IS A RUEDA?
HOW ABOUT A "SWING SQUARE DANCE"

Rueda came from the Salsa world, and simply put, is a Swing Square Dance. We partner up and stand in a circle, like in class. The caller (Rusty or Ron) calls out the moves throughout the song, and all the leaders follow the calls. Many of the moves involve passes from one partner to the next (like in a Square Dance). We use all the Level 1, 2, & 3 moves, PLUS there are a bunch of moves just for the Swing Rueda: "Po Po Bump", "Lone Star," etc.

We love this class! It is such a high, such a laugh, AND such a good opportunity to get the basics down pat.

If you are a Level 3 or up, come along and join the fun.

DANCE CLASSES! WHAT A BARGAIN!

We have a lot of wonderful options at Lindy By The Sea. Such as any second class taken on the same day is 1/2 price, and our "Golden Ticket" allows you to take ALL of our classes in a given series for only $100 or $90!! if you pre-register! What a deal. If you took four classes in the series, it would break down to $5.62 a class -- where else are ya gonna find that kind of bargain.

As mentioned last week, Ron and I have decided to add one more week in this series that is optional to you. We felt that it would be an excellent idea for those in the "Secret Agent Man" class, and for those in the Track, you would get a "review" week. This will also keep us with the Sunday classes who will be taking one week off for Memorial Weekend (NOTE: We will NOT (again NOT) be taking a week off).

GOLDEN TICKET
"I learn it on Monday, I practice it on Tuesday"

We have been noticing a rise in "Golden Tickets" as a result of our dual nite Tracks. People have been buying this all-in-one card as an opportunity to real pace themselves. As we have heard, "On Monday nite I learn the moves, on Tuesday nite, I practice the moves." If you would like to take advantage of our best offer, sign up for a Golden Ticket ($100, all the classes you want in the month series, or $90 (!!!!) pre-registered).

JUNE 18TH EVENT - JOIN US!

We have an Event On June 18th

According to Activity Coordinator, Shirley, "Most of our residents are vent or trach. Some are very responsive and enjoy live entertainment. For others, the dance and music would provide a wonderful sensory stimuli."

Not only do we need 4-6 couples to dance, we also need "hold hands" with residents, a narrator, DJ, (digital) photographer, all that stuff. As well as the usual display of Lindy and West Coast, we hope for a sample of Ballroom or Latin, as well as a tap number from a local tap student.

Hope to hear from you soon. You can talk to me at classes, at the Rhythm Club, or via my email below.

TAPDANCE.ORG: This was one of the VERY first web pages I ever saw (way back when). And since then its host has done a wonderful job in keeping the international tap community united and up to date. I am sure you will enjoy browsing around and see all the tap camps and festivals you could attend if only... fill in the blank... you could tap dance.... had the money... had time off... Enjoy.

Tap Day Bill

The passage of US Joint Resolution declaring May 25th National Tap Dance Day, was the result of hard work by Nicola Daval, Carol Vaughn and Linda Christensen of the Tap America Project. It was introduced and shepherded through the process by Congressman John Conyers and Senator Alfonse D'Amato and signed into law by President George Bush on November 7, 1989. {The next project for TAP is a commemorative stamp.}

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 131
Introduced by John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI)
SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 53
Introduced by Alfonse D'Amato (R-NY)

TO DESIGNATE MAY 25 AS NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY

Whereas the multifaceted art form of tap dancing is a manifestation of the cultural heritage of our Nation, reflecting the fusion of African and European cultures into an exemplification of the American spirit, that should be, through documentation, and archival and performance support, transmitted to succeeding generations;

Whereas tap dancing has had an historic and continuing influence on other genres of American art, including music, vaudeville, Broadway musical theater, and film, as well as other dance forms;

Whereas tap dancing is a joyful and powerful aesthetic force providing a source of enjoyment and an outlet for creativity and self-expression for Americans on both the professional and amateur level;

Whereas it is in the best interest of the people of our Nation to preserve, promote, and celebrate this uniquely American art form;

Whereas Bill "Bojangles" Robinson made an outstanding contribution to the art of tap dancing on both stage and film through the unification of diverse stylistic and racial elements; and

Whereas May 25, as the anniversary of the birth of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is an appropriate day on which to refocus the attention of the Nation on American tap dancing: Now therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that May 25, 1989 is designated "National Tap Dance Day." The President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such a day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).

BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."

THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:

1. Having fun! (Fun) 2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)

1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).

2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.

The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
