Happy Birthday, Jean Veloz! (March 1st)
"Nobody cares if you can't dance well.
Just get up and dance.
Great dancers are not great because of their technique,
they are great because of their passion."
RUSTY "LEFTY MCGEE" IS BACK ON THE DANCE FLOOR
Featured Class Tuesday nite lends moral support!
I can't tell you how great it was to be back on the dance floor teaching classes on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Of course, it's challenging to suddenly find myself a one-armed swing dancer, but thanks to Rhythm Pal Ron I have a new nickname "Lefty" (I've added on the "McGee"). And Ron and Gio have been superb about working around my limitations. You'd be amazed to find out you can actually dance with a scarf!
We had loads of fun on Monday and Tuesday in our "Opposite" Featured Class... (where we have all the men leading with their right arm and all the followers following with their left hand. To help everyone out, we gave all the gals slings... ain't it cute!
Featured Class Monday "Can Do It,too"
All of you students and friends have been great with your support, encouragement, and humor. 153 emails, loads of phone calls, and now.... Dana Creed sent me a Rosie The Riveter action doll... with "riveting action"!!!!!!
if you must have one, go HERE

RUSTY'S BIRTHDAY PARTY A WESTERN SWINGOUT!
With Cowboy Robert "Professor" Vangor
It was my first night out of the house last Wednesday, and though I was completely out of it, I had a terrific time surrounded by my swing dancing buddies -- YOU. Thanks especially to master of all Master of Ceremonies Mr. Maxwell DeMille and my wonderful troupe of dancers The Swing Shift Fliers; you made the night so special for me.
With Maxwell DeMille and cowboy Will Ryan
FLIERS DO BANG-UP JOB
Swing Shift Fliers standing by in case of incoming 1942 Fighter Aeroplanes
My Swing Shift Fliers performed beautifully at the Fort MacArthur event last Saturdays. Applause applause. They did a show including three numbers from their repertoire, and entertained the 600 plus guests with their showmanship and enthusiasm. Well done, Fliers!

NEW SUNDAY SERIES -- GET PRE-REGISTER DISCOUNT
Another Sunday series starts this weekend, March 6th. Make sure to get the word out. We've had two great months of newcomers, let's keep the trend going and bring more friends into our fun world!
Our new Monday and Tuesday series are a blast. Remember, it's not too late to join these if you had to miss the first day. Our Featured Class is "Opposite Leads". This series was set up just for Rusty, wait, just for YOU! The idea came about because Rusty will be unable to use her right arm for sometime. So in practicing, we came up with loads of great moves that get forgotten that utilize the lady's left arm. Oh boy! So get ready, fellow, we're really gonna work your brain. And get ready ladies, we're really gonna work on your left arm following!
Remember, Level 4 students, you can come back through any Level 1, 2, or 3 classes for $10/each for the entire series!

Yes, it's that time again, "The First Wednesday of the Month" when we have our Beginner Swing Dance Class at the Rhythm Club. We offer this super easy class for those who just want to check out the scene. Maybe they're not sure enough about swing dancing to sign up for a full 4-week Lindy By The Sea course yet... This class is just meant to give them a "taste" of the dance and the people, the environment, so to speak. Let all your co-workers, friends, relatives, and others (?) know about it.

TWO GREAT LINKS FOR YOUR THIS WEEK!
SWINGTIME.CO.UK: One of our most faithful readers is UK citizen Andrew Winton happens to host an amazing website! Take some time to travel around his site -- wow!
The second link comes from Andrew and it's Gene Kelly as you've never seen him before (or maybe ever wanted to see him!). Take a look at this new commercial:
GENE KELLY COMMERCIAL
Here's a great news article about the making of the commercial and how it took three dancers to do it!:
And to finish out, here's a nice letter from Andrew:
Well done on another beautiful newsletter. As you can imagine, running
Swing Time I get a lot of these things, and yours are easily the most
I was interested to read Bill Elliot's comment about the revival being
longer than the original era. I have written that a few times. It depends
when you date the original era. The shortest would be from 1935 (Goodman's
Palomar concert) to 1942 (Petrillo's musicians' strike). Or you could
start from 1927 (George Snowden's so-called naming of Lindy Hop).
Either way, we are now 20 years into the revival - so we win!
Congrats on the LA Times bit too. Gee, I have such famous friends!
Lots of love.
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast).
JOIN THE FUN!
BUT, WHAT THE HECK IS IT?
Many of you still don't know about our Swing Shift Rhythm Club. It's one of our best kept secrets. Now is the time to get the SSRC "above the radar."
THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB (SSRC), founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, The SSRC has two missions:
1. Having fun! (Fun)
2. Doing good deeds! (Philanthropy)
1. Having fun: Events where swing dancers can socialize and get to know each other outside of class (vintage clothes shopping, going to a dance-related movie, dancing in the park, eating at retro restaurants before a dance, etc.).
2. Doing good deeds: Events where we bring swing dancing to hospitals, senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The SSRC is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by its members. There are no dues. Members can attend as many or as few events as they wish.
"How do I join?"...
